  1. What do you mean smiling? He looks like the grumpiest Scammell owner i've ever seen:embarrassed: Are you missing the Meadows already:cool2: got a face like thunder in most of the vid> That Jake Brake of yours....how many settings has it got of is it just full on or off. some have different degrees of braking. Looking good though, Can't wait for some on road footage Hopefully we will be able to here it over oldguns whistling:D
  2. I that a recent accident? It looks like one that used to come to Anglesey Steam rally but i havent seen it for a couple of years. I think it was kept near flint or Wrexham?
  3. A Gardener eh.....? Keep it, trouble free motoring for ever....:-D Oh yeah...take the pipes of the rear axle oil cooler and make sure its pumping oil round before you go to far..
  4. Ok....To let the winch pay out cable....PTO should really be out of gear and the big brake leaver by the drivers door must be released, Also the winch drive dog clutch must be disengaged. This is the leaver on the rear wall of the cab between the seats.I think it should be pushed away from you to disengage the dog clutch. You should now be able to wander off with the end of the winch rope in your hand...... Or if its stiff like mine fasten it to a land rover and drive off:) To winch in......Apply the winch brake firmly, engage the PTO and then engage the winch drive dog clutch....You normally have to fettle the clutch to get the dog in. You are now ready to winch in and the operation is controlled by the clutch. The winch brake has a ratchet inside the drum which will be heard clicking when winding in, It should hold the load when you depress the clutch. Things to look for are....Winch brake stuck to drum....The serving gear rollers out of time with the winch drum.....Pressure rollers siezed or bent out of shape cos the serving gear is out of time. Good luck.. Mine was bloomin stiff and still is cos i never use it:)
  5. It's a slew bearing of some sort with a single point greasing system to each roller?
  6. Stunning job there Nick, Not too long before the big test run now. Have you got the shaft in yet?
  7. Well i dropped the oil out the rear axle today and it's not as bad as the first lot of oil i drained out:undecided: I am currently putting it through the centrifuge and it's coming out bronze free, infact a quick check revealed i nice layer of bronze stuck to the rotor in my filter:) There is also a lot of steel fragments in the oil too.....which is a tad more concerning:undecided: I had a good look through the drain hole at the crown wheel, It is pitted....very pitted in fact.....With some scuffing on both sides of the gear. Why would it be pitted? could some muppet have filled it with an EP oil that has eaten it away and then the bits of bronze have scuffed the driving face? there is next to no backlash in the worm and wheel nor can i see any end float in the crown wheel.....all very odd...I guess there is about 5 degrees of backlash in the prop flange through the whole rear axle before the wheels can be seen to turn. There is more free play on my land rover back axle:shocked: a few more oil changes an cleans me thinks:embarrassed:
  8. On an explorer the diff is rather huge and lifts out the top of the axle wich means the truck has to be out of the way somehow
  9. That oil pump gives a huge gush of oil to the rear bearing and increases with engine speed so even in the lower gears we get a good flow at full throttle:cool2: I'm going to try and clean the oil that came out last time as it was only in there for about 20 miles and only had slight bronze in it. It' not like the oil is golden when you look at it but when you look REALLY close there is bronze flakes in it:( Next time i drop the oil i will try to leaver the crown wheel about through the drain plug and take a photo of said burrs. I'm going to get a large leaver and give the pinion a good inspection just to make sure there is no play..
  10. I painted my scammell outside with two years between primer and top coat. It looked ok for about three years but then i removed and refitted the engine and bashed it about in the process and the decided to re plumb the air system so now it looks rather used....Still it looks ok on camera.....
  11. Fired it up today to see if the pump would prime up, It didn't.....well not straight away. So i took it for a spin down to porthmadog anyway:-). I stopped in the garage for some fags and the pump was happily humming away and all the pipes were warm, So it had primed. Can't detect any play in the pinion or at all so i'm pretty sure the crown wheel must have end float in it. Also need to sort a fan cowl out cos we started to boil up on the way home, down in 3rd at full throttle after a mile long hill in 5th there was slight steaming.... So i did what any other Scammell owner would do and kept my foot in it till we got to the top :sweat:I need to look at the vacume relief valve thingy on the top of the rad cos it's not pressurizing the cooling system and that's where the bubbles were coming from. Another job to do i suppose. Glad the temp gauge is broke or i would have been worried:cool2:
  12. I'll keep it in mind if there is no alternative.....Still waiting for the "i've got one you can have" message:D
  13. Yep it would work but would take some burning. It might do the splits though with the weight of the generator on it and its on boggy ground which doesn't lend itself to jacking and blocking:-(
  14. It's in Stafford.....:undecided: And the generator weighs about 3 or four tons:embarrassed: Driven off the Pto too.. Aparently he's got Martians rotting too..... Its the back up plan...
  15. I phoned up about a spare diff today, The good news is the trucks still there Looking very sad. The bad news is its sank in to the mud in a forest, there is a great big generator on the back and there is no lifting gear at the sight. This one will have to be the back up plan if i can't find something a little easier to get at:undecided:
  16. I'll give it a go tomorrow ans see if the tap has elped:)
  17. Hmmmm....Turn the crown wheel round eh..... Thats a thought.....See the main problem is to remove the axle in the first place its got to go to work where there is a nice handy mobile crane to lift the back end of the scammell up. I haven't got the room to do the job at home. i don't want to end up with a imobile Scammell stuck at work for months next to the seaside in the salty breeze. I'm going to run it round as is for now and might try to centrafuge the bronze out of the oil every so often. when funds improve i'll take it to work one weekend and bung a diff in it then have a look at salvageing the old one or weigh it in for scrap to recoup some cash back.
  18. Bloomin Scammells, they are a pain in the arse......getting your hopes up the kicking you in the nuts when you least expect it. I don't know what the facination is myself.........Oh hang on that's it they really are great fun to drive and have a huge grin factor.....:-D
  19. Ooohhh progress....excitement.....Getting there slowly...looking forward to the next installment in 2012:-D You want to put that wife of yours down for a moment lavish more love on you truck:cool2:
  20. I thought i would port a couple of pictures of said engine driven axle oil pump bodge.....I might have gone overboard with the pump size but it seemed to work well. There is a feed to the worm drillings and the other feed goes to what was the flow from the oil pump. The kink in the copper pipe was supposed to be a temporary means of reducing flow to the bearing letting most of the flow go to the worm jets.... Something went wrong... And some more crappy mobile phone footage of it working...
  21. Went out with a fresh head on tonight and between me and her indoors we managed to prime the pump up:-D I have now shut the cock and will leave it for a few days and see if it primes up next time.....I have put feelers out for a diff and might know where there is one but i need to contact the relavent people. i guess the crown wheel will have been scuffed and chewed badly so even if i went to all the trouble of rebuilding it it would never run in the correct mesh (assuming it could be set up correctly in the first place) I think i'm going to run the bas*$£d as is till things get bad by which time i should have the cash to sort it out....:-X Which brings me to another question....Lets say the diff gets REALLY bad.....I could pull the half shafts out and remove the propshaft and run her on the front axle:idea: Any thoughts on running at speed through the transposing box and front axle? I know loads of people have done it to get home when they have "shed" the rear prop but what about for the longer term? As means to stay on the fun side of scammell ownership
  22. Hmmmmmmmm........no pump eh.....Julian has a scammell called jumbo and his oil pump broke. He removed the cover plate from the rear of the diff where the oil pump is located then jacked the truck up and ran it up in top gear. he said it passed about a teaspoon of oil through the back pinion bearing after about 5 or ten mins, So some oil must get to thrown about in there......And with the oil hot i would have thought it would splash even more.... that was the only reason i fitted the engine driven pump to lube the thrust bearing.
  23. Ok anyone got a good spare diff???? How much am i looking at to purchase said diff....I can take it to work and use the crane to lift it up and rip the back axle out of it its only held on with 8 nuts.......Do the half shafts just pull out or are special tools needed.....If a good diff with a pump in it can be had for a 100 or 200 quid there might be hope. The only problem is that if you have a spare diff why would anybody sell one?......they might need it themselves a few years down the line? We'll have to see..... Currently my options are 1...buy a diff and sort it out....not cheap:-(:-( 2... Swap said scammell for another lorry.....no chance in it's current state:-(:-( 3....Flog it and buy a zil or something....but it aint worth a light in its current state so no chance of getting a diesel zil or m35 reo. 4....Break the scammell for parts.....how many people need parts for a bloody scammell...
  24. I fitted the valve when i got home tonight but can't get the pump to prime up:-( I'm pretty sure the bronze bits in the oil have damaged the pump so i won't pull the oil up. I can't be worrying about this pump everytime i take the scammell for a spin> Even if i fit the correct pump in the axle the same will happen to that. I no longer have it in me to start hoiking the axle out from under the truck to find out what's gone wrong.......There is slight pitting on the crown wheel seen through the drain plug:embarrassed: Even if the worm is only out of mesh slightly it must have worn the crown wheel. If i were to go into great strip down and adjustment i would still have to find a pump for the axle plus any other bearings ect and funds are just too tight.....And i can't be arsed.....Its no fun anymore. I love driving it but its marred by the fact that this axle thing take the edge off it. It's looking pretty likely that it's going up for sale.......i may get another large vehicle......Always wanted a militant mk3 recovery or a Something Russian...... With easy parts availability. I need to sleep on it for a little while but if you have any idea what it's worth in it's current state give me a clue......It stands me at about £7000 to date...
