  1. Right off out to do battle with the bigger drills:beatenup:
  2. I watched a program years ago and a stalwart driver came out with this when asked what it was like on fuel....."Oh it's really good on fuel.......it uses lots!!" That about sums up playing with big toys. You can blow £30 or £40 in the pub so why not put it in your fuel tank instead?
  3. I can see all sorts of fun and games under the truck this week:-| I'm still umming and arrring over the price of the loctite 660.....£30 odd with the postage:shocked: still if it stops the bugger falling off its a good thing:)
  4. Oh forgot to ask how much loctite will i need the small put should be ok?
  5. Having looked at the flange in depth now, there is the smallest barely detectable bit of play in the splines and i had to tap the flange most of the way off (then fell on my arse pulling it the last bit) Should i bother useing the loctite 660 or a thiner grade or fit it back as is? I can find no reason why the bolt should fail other than some arsehole had seriously overtightened the nut at some point as the nut is mullerd. I plan to tack the weld to the bolt to the flange so it can't undo. I am tempted to use the loctite 660 for piece of mind
  6. Went back out again armed with pistol drill and half an ounce of Golden Virginia ( alomost managed to stop smoking this last few months) I now have a 10 mm hole about 1 1/2" deep. Had to stop for tea and my arms are hurting. Off roading with the landy tomorrow but might have another struggle with the 16mm drill and the finally the 22mm drill later on weather permitting:-) My mate turned up with what looks like the most fustrating contraption i have ever seen......A 22mm morse taper drill bit, and a morse taper with a nut welded on the end so you can put a socket on the end and turn it with an air ratchet, oh and the taper is baggy so the drill falls out. He says its very entertaining  Slow and steady wins the race with that one me thinks:)
  7. All the tools have now arrived. REALLY looking forward to drilling an inch hole in the shaft with a hand held drill:-X decided not to weld splines just a huge tack weld between nut blot head and flange:-D
  8. Bugger was one of the more milder words used..... Glad you suggested the the drilling and bolt method cos my mate is on his way over with said large drill bit tap and a suitable bolt:embarrassed: I also plan to grind a taper on the mainshaft so i can get a nice big weld on the bloody thing so the flange and shaft are one and the same......Also plan to tack weld the bolt to stop it slackening off too. The only thing stopping it all falling off was the transmission brake mounting overlapped the drum:shake:. I know welding it all up is a propper bodge but to be honest there is no cash left in the pot for parts. It's either weld and see or Scammell for sale as non runner on Ebay.:embarrassed:
  9. Well the big grin has been slapped off my face yet again by the sodding scammell> I decided to take advice and have a look at the output flange on the gearbox. It seemed a bit baggy.....So i jacked up one side so i could turn the propshaft to faciltate nut removal and got the tools out, this is where it took a turn for the worst.....The shaft was held on with metric nylocks.....always a bad sign on my scammell that the butchering bas*$&s have been there first. Things got worse when i turned the shaft to gain easy access to some more propshaft bolts, There was a clink......like the nut had fallen off. Much struggling later i removed the propshaft and the nut fell on the floor......Compleat with the threaded part of the mainshaft and split pin:embarrassed: Honest to god i've had enough of this bloody truck now. Utterly fed up,pissed off.
  10. I really want to take it out again but this bloomin weather is buggering my plans for a nice test run......I don't want any issues in the rain and wind:-( then try and get a farmer to tow me home..... Next big spend is a new battery to replace the tiny little car battery that goes fat when i hit the starter button along side the 110 amp lorry battery and some roadside assistance cover:)
  11. The Explorer whine is a bit of an odd one really, some whine in top while others a pretty quiet. I,ve spoke to people who have spent a great deal of time and effort rebuilding boxes only to still have the bloomin whine. I'll buy some ear defenders and have a look at the propshaft flange . A s to passing places the Scammell is bigger than everything round here so they'll have to reverse back to the nearest turning / house /farm enterance. Also if you drive really fast in the middle of the road people panic and drive into the ditch thus making room to pass:cool2: And no i am still wandering round smiling and watching my video over and over and over.......:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:drive::drive::drive:
  12. I'll have to wait for my finances to improve before i'm allowed to make any more large heavy scammell related purchaces:embarrassed: I have just turned the fueling down to stop the smoke and save a bit of extra cash but it should'nt affect the "performance" to much i hope. I don't mind changing gears it's fun. You'll have to get used to changing gears too with that huge donkey engine you've fitted. After its munched them all up and spat them out:D You know what they say the bigger the engine the smaller the pei$* When we going to see this frankinstein smushing together of classic British engineering and American pig iron on the road:D
  13. I've just spent the evening turning the fueling down on the explorer as it was over fueling and throwing black smoke out. My first run out over very hilly narrow tracks worked out at about 4.5 miles to the gallon:wow: My next run will be more sedate with the pump turned down.
  14. Right i'll whip the shaft of and have a look pronto....well in between driving it and sorting the pump:-)
  15. Just been out and had a look at the book of words ( and pictures:)) and all it seems i have to do is remove the propshaft, undo flange nut "o" and draw off flange "N" with the tapped holes provided. Would i be right in thinking if the flange is baggy it should just pull off in my hand:undecided:
  16. cheers for that. is there a simple test for the spline play without pulling it off how much of a job is it to dismantel. i might do it as a matter of course.
  17. I put £90 and due to the over fueling half an hour of faffing around a home that little run of 6.5 miles cost about £7.50. About 4.5 to the gallon further runs and tuning and i'll keep you posted. I did thrash the arse off it all the way though so a more gentle approach might be more economical:cool2:
  18. Well to sum up the first drive at speed.......... OH MY GOOD GOD WHAT A TREMENDOUS NOISE:wow::nut::shake::shake::shake: honest to god the whine in top gear is not too bad on the flat but as the speed drops off on the hills Christ it makes your ears bleed.......Although i'm sure it got better towards the end of the run out. I don't really think it has been in top gear propper at speed for about 10 years. I'm not too worried about the box failing it's just a tad er.......loud on the hills till you drop down into any other gear which is silent:undecided: One thing that did bother me slightly was a sort of "ungle grungle gungle grungle grrr ga grrrr" that only manifests itself at speeds over 28mph between drive and overrun when your neither driving nor slowing down, Going over the crest of a large hill if you like. In fact it sounds very much like the Land rover 101 propshaft grumble.... Is this normall?....the shaft looks original and seems to be in good order and is well greased. The general drive........ Well...its ok...The steering s nice but i need to adjust a drop arm ball joint stop a slight steering shimmy that occurs going flat out, The brakes have come back to life and it stops hard enough to evict the batteries from under the seat. The gear shift is lovely and light and can be move with finger ant thumb ( OK i really need to practice just a tad more but i think i did ok for a beginner:red:) Suspension is FIRM and the tyres had huge flat spots on but they went after 2 miles and being 12 ply seem quite forgiving on the big bumps. And Finally on the the mighty Meadows........Well it's not so mighty:blush: It sounds fantastic and the exhaust was heard 2 miles away:whistle: It is a tad woeful on power and won't be rushed. We have some good hills here and we slowed up almost to the point of a down change However on the little track home it ran out of puff and had to hill start in 3rd:blush: It's also over fueling a bit too much so i will have to have a look at the pump, all that black smoke is just ££££££ going up for no benifit. Any way i'm off to watch my footage over and over:drive:
  19. Well if you pulled your ruddy finger out Andy you wouldn't have ti imagine what it feels like to drive:rotfl: Come on now one more big push and your there
  20. there are a couple of other bits of the run on my you tube channel:D P.S the meadows won't pull the skin of a rice puddin:rofl:
  21. And finally how to screw up the down change!!!! yes i know feel free to mock and take the piss:red: went for the clutchless shift missed it then went for the double de clutch and missed that too:nut: then had to wait for the bloody clutch to stop spinning with no clutch brake damn it. Still the transmission brake makes for an easy hill start:-DSomething went wrong...
  22. Here we are doing 75 mph!!!....not....more like 31mph sorry about sound quality:nut:Something went wrong... On you first tentative test run......Drive it like you stole it!!! keep the momentum!!!
