  1. Put the crane off a Leyland Martian on the back of it:cool2:
  2. I'm currently running an SAE 140 grade mineral oil that is suitable for some gearboxes, compressors, and four stroke engines...... I got it from my mate saying it must be suitable for phospher bronze gears and they use it on their steam engines which are coverd in bronze bearings and bushes...
  3. No filter at the moment....When the oil is cold it's so thick it's like treacle so i really can't afford ant restrictions in the line.. This axle problem is such an issue i'll never forget to open the valve.
  4. Just had a look at the rear axle oil and guess what the bloomin dust is back in the oil:-( Only a slight trace bu its back....And you know what, i don't care....it's been in there 61 years and if it wears out i'll have a front wheel drive scammell. I'll cross that bridge when i get to to it:undecided:
  5. Are your shells as bad as my main bearings. And you know what.......there was not a single rumble or knock just very low oil pressure Never thought about the advanced timing but your right it won't help at all....Unless it was going to run about 10,000 rpm then it might help....
  6. Small cracks and craters in the white metal bearings are normaly caused by overloading and the oil film being squeezed out alowing contact between the surfaces. Overloading is is caused by "lugging" the engine at low revs in a high gear. When i stripped my meadows down there were signs of this damage on the big ends. Never try to hold a gear cos your nearly over the hill your always better to rev hard in a lower gear. With Mine being a big square stroke diesel i would rather sit on the govener in 5th for two mins than lug it in top. Got to watch it with a petrol engine cos you dont have a govener but the drivers handbook should tell you the safe maximum engine speed.
  7. It's staying on for now mainly because it makes removing the engine a bit easier as i can just pop a jack under it and lift the front. Its also hugely welded on. Also had lots of comments about it looking pretty mean "A bit like the Jeepers Creepers truck...or the duel truck." Perhaps i should put it in for some film work......
  8. You have no idea how close to the truth you are about the secondary braking system.....It's just held up with two chains looped over two bent bits of rod.......However if you jiggle the chains as if the scammell was bouncing along the road they unhook themselves leaving the jaws of death just standing up in their own! There is now all sorts of rope tied round the thing in order to prevent me from being fired through the windscreen. It takes chunks out of the tarmac when you let it drop
  9. Right.... The bloomin oil drained out of my axle oil pump and it has a job priming up due to the 15 foot of pipe it has to suck the oil through (it's bloomin hard i know cos i had to do it in the car park....and i got a gob full:-() so i want to fit a full flow ball valve in the feed pipe near the axle so i can shut it off when the truck is parked up. We have them at work but they have a nylon bit in then to help the stainless ball seal......Will this nylon be ok with the hot oil of is it likely to melt ect..... I also plan to fit an air to oil cooler but at no point has the oil got hotter than the bottom hose of the radiator...so if the bowman was fitted my oil would be no cooler than it is running now without any cooling. Can the oil be over cooled?
  10. I also feel the need to enter you for the cleanest scammell award :wow: How much shimming did you have to do to get it all lined up? I gave up after two hours and declared that an 8th of and inch out was good enough>
  11. Pure Scammell porn....... Looking superb. Any reason why you took the pivot out to remove the front axle instead of removing the U bolts from the spring? Its much simpler cos then all you have to do id drop the shoe back on the spring:cool2: good looking front mount. We must have video of the first start even if it fails to fire up.... Took mine for a spin today today down to the beach to walk the dog, through the middle of Porthmadog ,then found the axle pump had failed to prime up:-( Had to pull the pipe off an suck the gear oil up to the pump:-X Took the dog for a walk and came back to find a crowd of people gatherd round said truck. spent half an hour chatting then shook everyones windows leaving. Everyone said it sounds great and not to fit a silencer.....most of them were in between 60 and 75 years old, who said old folk grumble about noise poloution:-). Everywhere the Scammell has been i've had a least one chap come up to me who has driven or rode in one during his national service and told all sorts of stories about them.....Its great fun. I still make a compleat arse of the down change from 4th to 3rd:blush:
  12.:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: I'm afraid i would have to agree with you on this but might have used phrases like "Its not my cup of tea" Or "its lost it's classic looks" But at the end of the day yes it has got "too much crap welded or bolted onto it":rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
  13. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/by-pass-oil-filtration.php There you go Mr Cube a little more info for you to chew over......
  14. Don't forget that side lights should be no more than 5 watts for a filiment bulb. LED lights are much brighter and less wattage. If they are really bright it may be like driving with front and rear fog lights on all the time and we have all been folowing them at some point. If the LED lights are as bright as my head light i bought from home bargins you will be blinding people. I'm pretty sure you can't just stick randome brightness lights all over your car there might be some kind of rules
  15. Yes they can slurp the oil out of the filter so either don't put oil in the bath just oil the mesh or i suppose you could fit an element in the housing. But a big turbo will slurp the oil:(
  16. Try googeling parker absolout bypass oil filters. Filters like this have been used for years on lorrys. some manufactuers say you can just change the filter and leave the oil in for ages as oil never wears out, It only gets dirty
  17. Interesting thread here. I'm sure that a vehicle traveling on a motorway or duel carrigeway has to be able to maintain 30 miles an hour minimum speed......I would never take my scammell on such a road its just not worth the risk.
  18. well if you've been tinkering with Daisy where's the pictures and the update..........hmm......well.....:???
  19. Don't think there is anything local to me for the rest of the year:-( So i'll just have to make do with pup runs and jollies to the seaside.I also really need to fit a new boiler in the log burner and sort the rest of the kitchen. But i can always jump in the scammell and go for a spin. I will try to get some timber on the back this winter. I havent dared look at the rear axle oil yet to check for bronze dust:shake: Hearing is slowly returning.
  20. I'm pretty sure the book says somewhere that you can winch at 90 degrees out the left had side as that pully keeps the rope clear of the chassis but less on the drivers side. I'll dig it out and have a read of the drivers hand book to make sure.
  21. Well that looks spanking Nick:wow: trouble free motoring in the making i'm sure. More pictures required as things progress. Good luck with the rest of it and stay positive:-D
  22. I think there is a danger of twisting the chassis winching hard out the font or at least if the pull is not straight breaking the fairlead casting off. there are two extra cross members welded under the front of mine which may have helped the chassis put up with the abuse. I just like the look of it now and it makes removing the engine very easy as i can just put one jack under the front. Oh by the way i'm home:-D and what a weekend....Super weather, great company, beer, camping and playing with with steam locomotives till very late. Plonked on at 25mph all the way, nothing go too hot and i had great fun. They roll when they warm up don't they The whole thing is like a different truck and the old Meadows seemed to wake up after a few good miles, I only dropped out of top twice on the way there and three of four times on the way home. And the fuel ecomomey is much better:-D:-D:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:
  23. Hey man....If its getting you down come and tell us, we can help cheer you up and laugh lots too:) Really looking forward to seeing some pictures:cool2: Don't be shy with the camara now:laugh: Are you using the Scammell oil bath filters? just a thought but i know someone who fitted a turbo engine in a landy series 3 and the bloomin thing pulled the oil up from the filter it sucked so hard... It will probrobly be ok but i thought i would mention it. Someone else on here might have already done it
  24. Whats all this about you getting your Scammell fix.?.. I hope there will be some footage....And hows this engine conversion thingy getting on:-)
