  1. Anyway as said Scammell was pointing the right way it seemed impolite not to take it for a drive, so pup was flung in the cab and off to the beach we went... the wife on the beach...
  2. Been busy today in this splendid weather:cool: Blanked off the unused ports on the axle and jacked it up for a test. in the lower gears there is no flow of oil through my scoop system however there is a fair bit of oil held in the rear bearing and after several minutes a very small amount of oil seeped through the bearing into the rear housing. engine speed was a constant 1000rpm for the test in all gears. The oil was stone cold. 4th gear still no oil through the pipe but definitely oil through the bearing. In fact you get a very fine mist being thrown from the bearing so oil is getting through from the worm side (if you could imagine the rooster tail of oil thrown of the crown wheel straight at the rear bearing) We then selected 5th gear and all everything came good. Plenty of oil through the scoop and pipe system and definitely worth the effort of drilling the axle case. I have good piece of mind the the back bearing is receiving plenty of lube. and the flow should increase with speed and with the oil warming up.Something went wrong... the best bit about this video is, I had the wife in the cab ready to hit the clutch just in case it fell of the jacks...As you can see she was like a coiled spring.......
  3. UUp for sale on milweb now....what happened fallen out with it already?...:embarrassed:
  4. I know they are supposed to be filled with inert gas or something but we have just had an bloody great screw type air compressor delivered at work that has and air drying plant on it. It produces "dry" air and is all computer controlled ect. Would it be ok to pump up an actuator using this....Oh hang just thought it only runs to 150psi so probably not...sorry just a thought...
  5. That's what I thought. It only really needs a tiny dribble to keep it wet. just think how much grease they put in those sealed rear wheel bearings on new cars.
  6. They look very similar the the ones on the front of a Scammell explorer. Mine are in perfect nick at 60 years old with no gaiters on....why can't land rover make then to the same standard....
  7. I've had mice eat through the radiator hoses on two cars. I crawled up into the warm engine bay and sat on the air filter chewing...ever tried to set a little nipper then shut the bonnet without setting it off:argh:I used a multi grain hoop with some chocolate spread......mmmmmmmm.......chocolate spread:-)
  8. Tonight in the wind and the dark i have managed to sort out the gravity feed to the rear bearing:cheesy: I'ts not been tested yet but it can't not work.. First i drilled a hole in the side of the worm case and tapped it out to 1/2" BSP then i screwed a piece of BSP pipe into the hole. The end of this pipe has been fashoned into a sort of trough with the end blanked off. It protrudes into the worm chamber about 1" just behind the worm. An elbow, pipe and then another elbow take the flow of oil under the influence of good old reliable gravity (no pumps required here thank you) into the rear housing where the pump used to live and hence to the rear bearing...a hole was drilled and tapped in the rear housing to take the elbow. The next mission is to jack it up and run it in various gears and speed to see how much flow we get through the pipe (I do need to do the 37 point shuffle to get it out of its parking spot first though:undecided:) Oh, I took some piccies too.... Look more oil in in the rear case and thats after 15 miles with no oil pump.....and being stood for three weeks.
  9. weld up the cut with a stainless rod, file and emery to perfection, keep as a spare or reuse. Are they chromed?
  10. more like smashing my knuckles on the rear axle when the spanner slipped tonight:-(
  11. :wave:Well here i am, still the same Scammell (unfortunately) but with it's new name and the one it's going to have for the rest of it's life...Good old reliable Dora..
  12. On another note as the Scammell was named after my ex girlfriend there has been much debate over the renaming of the old girl Especially as i am now married to my wonderful Wife Paula. Anyway having to keep this blog going with the name of my ex on it is slightly annoying and results in a certain amount of Frowning from my wife bless her, So there will be no more posts on this blog, It's time to move on. I shall continue my seemingly endless restoration blog in a new thread.....I'll see you on that....
  13. Just been looking back through my blog and noticed something that might be of interest that i missed before. This is a picture of the broken and devastated oil pump and gears i found in my rear axle. Now it had clearly been broken for a very long time before i got it and i drove it 7 miles home along some quiet back lanes to get it home. It then sat for a couple of years while i sorted the cab and then it had a couple of very short runs down the drive as a test. Then i thought i would check the axle oil pump and found this.........But what i overlooked was the oil in the rear case....It's clearly in there so oil must get through the rear bearing even at low speed.....Interesting......all the bearings seem fine, i think it must have run for years without a working pump possibly doing some heavy towing.... What do you think?
  14. Hole drilled and tapped to half inch BSP Scoop made and screwed in went dark bloody poxy winter time. Will they stop debating it and just put the bloomin clocks another hour forward in summer, god i'd rather have light in the evening and get up in the dark..... Anyway after drilling the hole i shunted the Scammell back and forth in the low gears (only about 10 foot due to lack of space) and not a sausage came out the hole. Had a look through the hole and could see oil on the worm part of the shaft but nothing towards the back bearing area. next step is to sort the fittings to the rear case then jack it up and run it at different speeds and gears now the scoop is fitted to check the flow of oil.
  15. Just do what you feel happy with... for me the scammell is a great big toy of a lorry i love "and hate" playing with. the fact it is ex military means nothing to me really and i have no interest in military history. It's painted red and goes in the commercial section at rallies, However i am always staggered just how many old boys have driven or worked with a scammell explorer. They aren't bothered it's not green and i'm wearing a pair of jeans and a tee shirt they are just happy to see one again...
  16. don't use EP90 it will attack any bronze bushes and bearing parts.....
  17. Hows about a Detroit 6V 53? 216hp at 2800 rpm....Not bad for a diesel and sounds superb..... Hmmm might be just right for my scammell one day:cool2:
  18. I have in the past made them from copper sheet cut with tin snips and hole punches ect then lay them on some plywood and soften them up with a blowtorch. done 500 miles so far with the scammell most of them at full throttle no leaks so far and cost about £10..
  19. Yep lots of oil scooped up by the crown wheel rotating forward onto the worm where i'm pretty sure it most is flung off and some is screwed forwards (with the worm and the top of the crown wheel and then it makes it's way to the front of the worm shaft and the front bearing. Now the rear worm bearing is having most of the oil screwed away from it. There is also a shoulder that the bearing sits against. I'm pretty sure some oil will find it's was to the rear bearing as it has to be able to find its way through from the other side when the pump is fitted. the Scammell Pioneer never had an oil pump or cooler fittted however a sort of Scoop was fitted near the crown wheel to divert oil to the rear worm bearing. This scoop was deleted on the explorer, Instead a 1/8 hole was drilled in the body of the oil pump to alow oil out into the rear case to lubricate the pump gears and also the rear worm bearings. (if anybody can spin their pump up and see if this oil hole has bunged up it would prove that the bearing can run with no supply from the pump) I am only trying to get a bit more oil to the rear bearing just for piece of mind. I'll let you know how i get on...
  20. And this is the reason my Scammell explorer is painted red and goes to vintage vehicle rallies entered in the commercial section, A great bunch of blokes who are interested in old lorries and how they work and the huge efforts to restore them and keep them on the road. I bought the scammell purely because i love the lorry, I just happened to have been built for the army. After all this is a Historic Military VEHICLE forum.......
  21. It's highly unlikley that he would join the forum after the kind of insults thrown at him in the first post on this thread. I for one feel slightly let down by the insulting behavior and if he wants to join up i have no problem with it. Insults thrown about in forums REALLY ANNOY ME. It one thing in private face to face but not on a world wide forum.... He's more than welcome here i'm sure
  22. You've lost me here i cant see where i stated that fact. But your right unless you were a copper or fireman ect i don't think the general public should have the right to wear said uniforms. Men and women worked long and hard to earn the right to proudly wear them and to see a bunch of IT workers poncing about glorifying death and suffering at the weekend is not my cup of tea. As for films and documentorys.....well there is a button i use on the remote control, I don,t think war films are very accurate either. I would rather read a factual book or a real soldiers memoirs. Mind you without their brave efforts and losses we would probably wouldn't be able to prance about depicting how great being shot at was....
  23. Every piece of equipmemt and every vehicle the army owned was designed to do one thing, Kill people. Even the ambulance vehicles are used to get peopleto a hospitle so they can be treated in order to get back out there and carry on killing. Even my humble Scammell recovery tractor was made to help keep the general killing machine mobile. Different things offend differet people. I personally find grown men running round a field pretending to shoot each other highly offensive but would never want to stop anybody or insult them, i just don't watch it. Wearing a uniform of any kind should not be allowed unless you have earned the right to in the forces. Just put them on dummies so i can look at them...... just my two pennies now go and enjoy yourselves with whatever floats your boat....
