The practice of naming tanks etc.

It is very complex -so much so there should be a book about it -there is B.T. Whites British Tank Markings and Names -if you can find a copy.

Hi Steve,

Although there hasn't been a book about Tank Names since B.T. White, as far as I know, the idea is to get a listing on line.

If you follow the link at the bottom of the page there is a base for a spread sheet to try and find them all.

Thanks for all the new additions.

Cheers

Kevin

Great question as always wondered if naming carried on as a few of our airliners at work have been named in the old traditional way, the bosses forcing names of people they want to impress on them. Has anyone got a list of names from m3 halftracks as with the repaint going on we thought it'd be good to put a name on her.

Cheers

Steve

Unless your name is MacAuslan (GMF's dirtiest soldier in the world).

They find themselves going out on a night exercise in the desert and it all goes horribly wrong ... until MacAuslan announces that those two stars up there are Gasper and Bollux. turns out that he has been listening to the padre rambling on about the night sky and some of it has stuck. Surprise, surprise, MacAuslan saves the day.

AHH hAA the Constipation of o'Brian !! :-D Easy it's over the Cook house!

Certainly the armoured units I served with namely QRIH, 5RIDG, 3 & 4 RTR, QOH, 13/18 H (QMO) and the Sultan of Omans Armoured Regiment named their armoured vehicles. all beginning with the letter of the Sqn. The HQ ARV was called Lucozade...as it aids recovery (as an old advert goes)...

Certainly a Regimental thing. I was 14/20th KH, and non of our tanks/wheeled FVs were named, however, REME had a habit of naming their ARVs and 438s.

Our only side markings were Squadron signs, and removable net ID panels, 31c etc.

Dave.
