  1. More about weight carrying that cross country ability I would think.
  2. I would think just the same as XK clearances. early engines 4 Thou inlet, 6 Thou exhaust. Post 1968/69 engines 12 Thou inlet, 14 Thou exhaust. If the engine has many hours on and you have access to an endoscope check the lower timing chain tensioner when you take the cam covers off. To see if it is still in place.
  3. It's a few years ago but the article with it said they were LHD. If I remember rightly they were towing flat trailers
  4. I can remember thinking the same about the Mat's at the time.
  5. AEC 0853 Dorsetshire also 0854 variant of which 151 were made according to one source, production 1944/45. I also have seen a photo of LHD Matadors outside of the AEC factory, for delivery to South Africa.
  6. There cannot have been many LHD models made.
  7. There is at least one wartime one under restoration by a forum member.
  8. One I have seen a photo of was an AEC Militant Mk3 6x6 LHD Command vehicle. FV11061. 1966.
  9. Could be a Ford Sussex with the larger front mudguards.
  10. My father was involved after WW2 taking gun's and mounts off HSL'S and MTB's in the Gair Loch and pushing them overboard.
  11. Changing tyres loaded would be fun, Not.
  12. As with any changes going for better than original usually gets a thumbs up from the insurance company. As they have the casting vote.
  13. Absorbent in a spill kit can help and can be dried out. Even a tray of cat litter.
  14. Of coarse the other things to look at when changing tyre sizes is the load and speed rating. I presume we are talking about a Leyland Hippo 11a. For the time these were considered a heavy truck rated at 10 tons. I am sure that I can remember my father changing 36x8 tyres for 9.00x20 and even 10.00x20. I think the original front tyres 10.50 x22 were difficult to get back in the day.
  15. There was one at Yorkshire Air Museum, but I think it had had an engine type change. I cannot remember what It had as a replacement for the L60. Maybach is ringing a dull bell.
  16. I think Withams had 7 under wraps at one time.
  17. As this Forum is aware getting imperial sized marked tyres is getting increasingly difficult. Older sized tube type tyres are either low volume production making them expensive or no new production, relying on old stock for supplies. As time goes by compromise is going to have to be the name of the game as age related use comes into effect. Metric marked tyres are going to be all that will be available, or possibly some imports from countries still using the old format.
  18. It is a long time since I have seen any 36x8 tyres, I would think the closest today would be 11R.22-5.
  19. I only watched about 10 min's of the first episode. I thought I would get the high lights on this forum. There cannot have been many 4x4 Matador tankers.
