registraton marks

Hi I am new here and have a question about reg marks I have a 2a land rover with a no 78 AA 46 wot can I find out about this? also the reg doc says first registered 1969 but appears to be earlier is there a reason for this I hope some-one can help.

Posts #23 and #24. Not much use, My regs and serials are both too far away from 1972/73 changeover to be any use in working out a likely last chassis or reg in 1972. Sorry

As a matter of interest I was still at C.V.D. Ashchuch during the hot year so may well have had the pleasure of driving your EB. And 'No' that dent, scrape and scratch was not me - never did it:red:

One source, the MAFVA registration lists (not complete) lists vehicles with FW suffixes being C Vehs 1969/70.

My point is DVLA say this was First Registered in 1969. Logic says that before then it was unregistered. (What other state can it be in before being "First registered"?)

 

So it was carrying a 2 number, 2 Letter, 2 number mark from 1962 to 1969, but as far as DVLA and I am concerned it was "unregistered" for this period.

I believe that your interpretation in this matter is essentially correct, the owner of this vehicle was obviously perplexed thinking that the vehicle was (is) pre 1969, you have answered his question.
