gazzaw Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 I am about to fit, onto the front grille, a condenser to my radiator for desert work. Does anyone know how best to use it, should it be part filled with cold water to help steam condense inside or is it left empty as an overflow? Is there any literature about it in any sort of manual? Thanks Gary Quote
Tony B Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Normaly you would fill to about 1/4 with cold water. Make sure your in pipe is below the level of the fluid in the condenser. As the coolant expands it blows off and is cooled, as the engine cools and the coolant contracts, then a partial vacum is created drawing the contents of the condenser back up. Quote
Mark Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 Ok that sounds good. always wondered why they were needed can anyone explain please. ?? Quote
Tony B Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 If the vehicle is operating in very hot climates, such as Desert, low speed high revs or running stationary, no air flow over the rad, then a condenser could be needed. Modern antifreeze also acts as a summer coolant, plus modern oils have a greater cooling effect so not nessacary. Even older non pressured systems such as The Dodge, rarley need them. Quote

Tony B Posted May 13, 2008 Posted May 13, 2008 The jeep will be going to the sahara next year so it will be required. thanks Gary check out www.wdrg.org for more details of trip Get the system fully serviced. Radiator needs to be absolutley clean, and presure tested. Have the engine water channels flushed. Use only distilled water and anti freeze. This will also inhibit rust. You are going to be running in extreme conditions try the various expedition sites, Quote
gazzaw Posted May 14, 2008 Author Posted May 14, 2008 Thanks, new radiator fitted and will be totally flushing out everything etc before trip. Gary Quote

There is a professional film crew making a documentary re same on our trip too! Gary Quote
