Ok I would like any pictures that anyone has to help me understand what this should look like! So I can rekit mine!

I have the same rack in my 109.. I've got my PRC-352 with the manpack frame on & it sits in there nicely, the base of that frame in the Landy is the same shape as on the manpack... not sure if that's what goes there but it looks right & would make sense if there was no radio operator in the back...

Water carrier (plastic jerry can), goes in the front rack. The rack and table, are universal radio carriers. Installation kits were supplied to fit a specific radio to a vehicle. So if a C42/C13 fit was required, the radio carriers, hardware, cables, control boxesetc would be part of another kit.

Works the same with Clansman. Clansman manpacks carried in vehicles, would normally be carried in "clip in" kits. These are differant for afv and softskin types.

I do have mine fitted in the rear too... just pointng out that it fits in that front rack too...

As has been said, I can see a lot of mileage in having a manpack in the front where there is no operator or if the commander is, for example, an FOO who needs to get out and advance tactically into an OP and take a radio with him.

 

On the other hand, it might also be appropriate to mount a WATER jerry can there for ease of access. It's bad enough sitting on the petrol tanks without then having cans in the cab.

 

When we first got Clansman, the establishment for an Armd Recce Regt for for no more literally than a handful of VHF manpacks (I should know - I was Regimental Signals Storeman for a year or two. The Regimental Signals Store was literally outside the main entrance to the cookhouse, so I went to the QM's Clothing Storeman and blagged a brown technican's coat so that I didn't need walk across the regimental square, get changed for lunch, walk back, eat, walk across to change back then get back to work).

 

If we needed to work dismounted we unreeled a few hundred metres of Don 10 and plugged in a remote handset.

 

By the time we left, there was talking of slashing the establishment of UK/VRC353s by replacing one in each Scorpion with a 351/2. Working in two-car sections, I'd guess they'd dismount the 351/2 from one vehicle change frequency, bimble off into the ulu and rebroadcast that frequency through the other car's 351/2 and out into the net via the 353.

 

So manpacks were something I was lucky to see and I cannot speak from experience in this case.

 

FWIW, there was a similar, larger mount on the back of a Sultan. It was the perfect size to mount an industry-size Calor Gas (or Camping Gas or whatever) bottle used to run giant heaters to keep the penthouse warm in the depths of a BAOR winter. Don't want the dear officers to get cold feet while we are fighting a battle, do we?

 

Since you ask, AFAIK it was meant to mount a canister of bleach slurry, to be used during NBC decontamination.

The Land Rover in the picture used to belong to me! it was an ex Gurkha Regiment Series 3 FFR.

 

The holder in the front is indeed for a Jerrycan, and if you try, it will not take a plastic water jerrycan because they are a slightly different shape/size, i know because i tried it.

 

If you look between the two rifle clips above the base there is a bracket going to a point, on top of that is a hinge, on this vehicle the metal arm that attaches to that is missing, also there is what looks like riveted plates that held a webbing strap in place to go around the can.

Prior to later Land Rovers having side lockers, i believe this was the solution to a regulation for all vehicles to have a spare fuel carrying capacity for self sufficiency and replenishing other vehicles, on the later landrovers the side panniers held fuel, until a later regulation ruled it out allowing only water to be carried in the sides. I remember making sure that the seals on the jerry cans were A1 before loading them up!

 

The placement of the Jerrycan also makes sense, the fuel tanks are under both front seats, requiring the removal of the seat bases to gain access to fill, the secure fitting of a serviceable jerrycan, not really adding any more risk than you already had, and im pretty certain if everything was going to get exciting, it would be easy enough to remove.

 

And as pointed out in the diagrams, radios were never carried in the front of the vehicle, they were always fixed to the racking in the rear and connected to the vehicles power supply, with the headset/PTT put through to the driver/passenger if required.

 

By the way, the right angle torch in the picture is a nasty American thing, but made a decent enough interior light!

 

Does somebody on the forum own this Land Rover??
