Andrew Rowe
Just trying to figure out what vehicle this unit is off. There is a smoke screen switch, and and ON/OFF , left and right movement switch for a Convoy light. Where the smoke button goes is marked Right for that side, so must be another similar bracket for the left side one I found a Butlers switch that fitted the holes perfect, and had the correct right and left hand switch movement. I take it a smoke screen would only be for a Tank? , Not Valentine , throwing it out there...maybe Matilda or Covenanter? Has anyone seen something similar ?, Cheers Andrew. Richard Farrant
Hi Andrew, Going by the label, the stock number appears to be indicating that it is to do with the air force, ie an RAF vehicle.
Andrew Rowe
Hi Richard, I know the smoke screen button is airforce, AM manufacture, these were used in Tanks. Bracket is inscribed with Convoy light. Did Planes have Convoy Lights? The wording Convoy is covered up by the switch. The actual switch with the tag was one I found that fitted the holes, so not really sure that this is the proper switch for the bracket?. Andrew Rowe
I see you said RAF vehicle, so did something like a Layland Hippo have a smoke discharger on the back?

Richard Farrant
Hi Andrew, I think this is to do with Fog not smoke, and was to light up a Follow Me sign to escort aircraft on landing in fog conditions. See the centre aperture as the wording at the to say Screen.
Andrew Rowe
OK, sort of makes sense, Thanks for the info.
Adrian Barrell
I think the RAF label is confusing things here. The switch just happens to fit and may indeed be the correct switch but the plate is engraved CONVOY LIGHT and SCREEN RIGHT so I suspect it is for a smoke generator equipped vehicle, likely armoured. Andrew Rowe
My point exactly......so what armoured vehicle? The bracket was taken off a vehicle from a pool of the most likely Canidates from: Valentine ( ruled out ) , Matilda, Covenanter, Big Daimler Mk2 with 2pdr - is it from this? Adrian Barrell
Nothing like it in the handbooks for any of those vehicles. It would have to be something with smoke generators both sides in the style of Cromwell etc. None of those vehicles had smoke generators so perhaps it was a retrofit item but the convoy light was normal so would already have been provided for. Andrew Rowe
The Valentine had smoke generators, but not with this bracket.

Adrian Barrell
There was no mention of them in the handbook I looked in, I should have checked further! No need now.
