Marmite!!
From the archive, first published Tuesday 13th Mar 2001. Memorial marks brother's death Ex-Queen's Own Hussar Simon 'Fred' Stokes, of Didcot, paid a poignant visit to the regimental garrison in Episkopi, Cyprus. A desert-coloured saladin is situated on the roundabout in the front of the main gate of the British Sovereign Base Area as a permanent memorial to Mr Stokes's brother L Cpl Nick Stokes. L Cpl Stokes, a member of B Squadron in the Queen's Own Hussars, was tragically killed during a training exercise in Cyprus in October 1992. He was commanding a ferret reconnaissance vehicle when he died in Paramali training village, near Episkopi. L Cpl Stokes was the youngest of four brothers, three of whom have served in the Army. He joined up in March 1985 and inspired his bother Simon to follow him into the Queen's Own Hussars two years later. Mr Stokes said: "I have not been out to Cyprus to see the memorial before and I was simply agog that this has been put up to remember him by, especially in such as prominent position in the garrison." The armoured squadron mounted in ferrets and saladins - known as the 'Cavalry' - were based at Episkopi until 1993 when it was then disbanded. Mr Stokes now works for a satellite television company in Oxfordshire. During his visit to Cyprus to see the memorial, he was welcomed by a serving member of the regiment Queen's Royal Hussars Capt Rupert Greenwood. The Queen's Own Hussars and the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars have now combined to form the Queen's Royal Hussars. Edited August 26, 2010 by Marmite!! snowdrop358
Does anyone know what the actual identity of this vehicle is? 01CC69 is alive and well. she lives in Norfolk now. She also has the data plate in the hull that confirms that identity. we know that she was active in Cyprus so this would have been a sister vehicle.
