What does 'PUR' mean on an air filter?

fv1609

Question

I have just replaced both the Donaldson air filters in my Wolf. I have not noticed this before, but at each end of both filters it is marked >PUR<

It looks as if it is important to be marked in this way, but I can see no special structural difference or keyway that the marking might indicate.

I have goggled but found nothing. Any ideas please?

Thanks for the various suggestions. The inner filter is indeed a fine blue foam but the outer is entirely folded paper.

What struck me odd was that the markings at each end were in the same relative positions, suggesting it was something to do with the way they should be fitted in, but that must just be a coincidence.
