1964 Rover 8 40 Amp FFR electrical issues

1964 FFR 88

Question

Recently I have been connecting all electrical bits on my 1964 FFR but for some reason nothing works. No lights, starter or anything. The batteries are both good and charged, all the fuses and relays are correct and good and all the wires in the starting circuit are clean and tight. So why nothing is working goes beyond my very limited technical skills. Here is a problem for the more experienced electrician:

When I had everything connected at first everything worked perfect (Generator, generator panel and rectifier not connected). When I turned the six-way contact to 'on' you could hear the solenoid click. Immediately upon pressing the starter button the starter turned over. When I let go of the starter button the starter motor stopped. However, after letting the starter motor turn over for a few seconds two or three times the starter motor would keep running after letting go of the starter button. First it would run on for a second or so, but after trying a few more times the starter would keep on running much longer until I had to disconnect the battery. Turning the key 'off' would not stop it anymore. I read that this might be a fault in the six-way switch or the relays so I removed the six-way switch and sprayed some dry lube in the hole of the key and tested the relays, which worked fine on the bench. When I put it all back and tried to connect the battery leads however the leads would spark violently upon touching the terminals, melting the terminals instantly. Unfortunately the multimeter made the terminals spark too when I measured between the positive terminal and ground so I can't test anything here. It does measure 12v between the positive and negative terminals. When I could last let the starter motor run it was running a bit slower already so I gathered perhaps I had drained the batteries. These were both full however. A few weeks went by and I decided to try again making sure every loose wire was insulated. I disconnected every wire not in the starter motor circuit. Now there was no sparking from the battery terminals but ever since nothing has worked. No click from the solenoid upon turning the key and I measure infinite resistance between the battery and the ground.

It is strange that the car's electricals changed from working normally to sparking (a short somewhere I gather) to doing nothing. Any ideas are greatly appreciated as this is the last step that keeps the car from driving. I hope you will accept the challenge ;)
