fv1609
How about a building being marked out as a gymnasium. Steve. It looks as if it could be that sort of thing Steve marked out for those pointless PT games we had to do, but its not that.

Jerrykins
A layout for dormitory quarters, positioning marked out for bunks, is my best guestimate. Jerry

fv1609
Clue: a - c = b - d = 10ft a - b = c- d = d - e = 5ft But the markings 5 & 10 horizontally each side represent something other than length
fv1609
A layout for dormitory quarters, positioning marked out for bunks, is my best guestimate. Jerry Not a dormitory Jerry, there is no roof to this structure
fv1609
OK, let's try prison cells. Nope not prison cells. The structure was not for human or animal accommodation.
Ex-boy
Would it have been built in barracks or on a training area? Steve.
wally dugan
as it has no roof then it does not matter what ever is in there gets wet is it for protection against a form of blast
fv1609
Would it have been built in barracks or on a training area? Steve. Not a training area Steve, but most likely a barracks.
fv1609
as it has no roof then it does not matter what ever is in there gets wet is it for protection against a form of blast I would have thought it might matter a bit if it got wet but apparently that wasn't important. Blast walls, a good idea Wally as the sketch suggests flared out side walls, but that is artistic licence to give perspective. It was important that the walls were square on to each other. gritineye
seems to me that passage isn't wide enough for a person to pass along if the marked areas where full of summat solid ....hmm.
wally dugan
is what ever is in there craned in over the walls
fv1609
seems to me that passage isn't wide enough for a person to pass along if the marked areas where full of summat solid....hmm. That is a good point Bernard. The length of the back wall is not defined & this could vary with circumstances of what was available. It is not critical indeed other than allowing some access through. I suspect the representation has been squeezed sideways to get it into the page. It does say here: "The marking of the ....................depends on its shape. The normal shape is rectangular and it should be marked out by the Royal Engineers ..................with a passage down the middle." Does that help? fv1609
is what ever is in there craned in over the walls That's always possible Wally but I think access would be easiest from the way we are viewing it & probably a crane would not be involved. gritineye
Does that help? It may do as your reply sort of implies the spaces are well filled with something solid..
fv1609
It may do as your reply sort of implies the spaces are well filled with something solid.. Good thinking Bernard, it is solid in a sense but the shape can change depending how much there is of it.
