lynx42 Rick Cove
I have a 1977 Leyland with a 410 turbo diesel and a 6 speed with splitter and I use it to move and recover my vehicles. The attached photo shows us off to a display at Avalon Airport some 450km. from home a few years ago. The load is my M3a1 White Scout Car and my 1916 Albion A10 WW1 truck As it is time to give the old girl a respray I thought I might do a military paint job so that it fits in with the rest of the vehicles in the collection. So my question is, did the British or any foreign forces use any Leylands of this period? I know that there were none used in Australia but thought that they may have been used somewhere else. Thanks Rick..
Richard Farrant
Hi Rick, I do not recollect the British Army using a Leyland with the Bathgate cab, but think the RAF had some artic tractor units which were Leyland Mastiffs, with that cab. The cab was also adapted for the Scammell Contractor, as the Aust. Army used for tank transporting. There was a Leyland 4x4 8 tonne on trials, when the contract was out for that weight range, but the Bedford TM won it. Might be able to find a picture. Richard Farrant
Rick, I remembered a thread on the Leyland 4x4, here it is; http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?15702-Leyland-4x4 In the Leyland thread above, mention is made of a 6x6 Leyland being trialled by the Australian army, the contract being won by Mack. There was a 6x6 in service with the Heathcote Bush Fire Brigade, to the south of Sydney, in the late Eighties, perhaps this was one of the army trials vehicles. brown cow
Hi to Rick & Richard, I was scanning some photos only last night which included the Leyland 6x6 mentioned as trialled by the Aust army. I took the photos at a disposal sale at Tottenham depot in inner Melbourne in the late 70's. Naturally I didn't write down the date! The Leyland looked a bit bedraggled, and the only one I saw but there were 2 Hino 6x6, one with crane and one without. Also saw 2 Bedford 4x4s which presumably lost out to the Unimogs. regards Andrew.
Richard Farrant
Thanks Andrew, Going by the cab number, there were at least 3 Leylands presumably. The Hino ...... I have seen one at Corowa in the past, with a flat body, will have to dig out the photos to see if it is one of these trials vehicles. Degsy
I could be wrong but I have a vague recollection of Indian Army vehicles fitted with the Bathgate cab. Might be worth researching.
lynx42 Rick Cove
I appreciate your answers, Degsy, Richard and Andrew, and I have been searching the web off and on today. I found this one and someone may have more info about it. My Leyland was also a prime mover in it's heyday, pulling milk tankers around the West Gippsland area for Petersville Milk Products. This is sort of what I was looking for. It was found on flickr. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/merf29/with/5687182388/) The caption says that it is a RAF with a Queen Mary trailer taken somewhere on 30/08/1984. It is early days and the info must be out there. It would be interesting to see if any G Cabbed Leylands went to India.
lynx42 Rick Cove
And another one with no details. ( ) The rego numbers are also very close. 74 AN 24 (?) and 73 AN 95. So it seems that the RAF had a few. Edited August 26, 2012 by lynx42 Rick Cove More information.

Degsy
I doubt that any Leyland's were exported to India, I was thinking more in terms of vehicles built in India , possibly by Ashok Leyland.

N.O.S.
The answer may here? (I can't play the video). Interesting that their current military trucks use the ford Cargo cab! http://www.ashokleyland.com/history
Richard Farrant
Ashok Leylands now use Iveco engines and the old Ford Cargo cabs. A bit like the BMC trucks made in Turkey, name is only link with the past.

lynx42 Rick Cove
So we might give India a miss then. I have been through hours of the Ashok Leylands, but they are far to modern. SO.. Lets go back to the RAF prime movers. Any more info on them out there? BTW.. I hope your feeling better too, Degsy. Attached is a 3/4 front photo of a recovery of a 1941 Ford F60L fitted with a recouperator service van body for servicing the 25pdr. gun/howitzer recouperators. (This one is coming up for sale. If your interested contact me.) On the back of the Leyland is a Crane Set No. 7 which has proved itself very hand over the years. lynx42 Rick Cove
I found this one and someone may have more info about it. It would be interesting to see if any G Cabbed Leylands went to India. Does anyone know what colour the paint is on this G cabbed Leyland? I have stripped the cab out and am removing all the wiring, air lines, steering etc. so will start with just a bare cab and take it from there. I will not have the exhaust out under the front bumper. Here in Australia it is against the law if the vehicle was not fitted that way originally, and the Leylands here had upright exhausts. Regards Rick. Sean N
Does anyone know what colour the paint is on this G cabbed Leyland?. Rick, give this is four years old I'm way too late, but I believe this is NATO green, but gloss not matte. I've also seen these Mastiffs in RN / Navy Blue. I have a memory of some specialist vehicles with Bathgate cabs coming through Aston Down in the early '90s, but it may be a totally faulty memory. They would also have been gloss NATO green.
