GMC - Unusual No.7 set Body

What was Y Service, Tony?

The thing about this GMC is appears to have a standard wooden body but with higher sides. There wasn't an office body for GMCs - only ST5/6 workshop bodies and a few unusual radio/dentistry and other specialist group bodies, all of which were steel.

They were the group that actually intercepted the German Radio signals that were sent to Bletchley for the Enigma code to be brocken. They were also reponsible for the Special Liasion Units, or SLU's, therse were the units attched to headquarters that were authorised for Enigma Decrypts. Bletchley re -enchipred the info and it wa sent to the SLU's for distribution. Folowing D-Day they sent both Y and SLU's to Europe. And they used a lot of American vehicles including WC54's. The American' also had intercept units. And as you say 'Specialist Radio Bodies'. Though that a frame coming out the back, could be for work on classified equipment?

The sides of a wood body can easily be made taller as in the picture. just add a few more planks to the side (tongue and grove) and add new, longer vertical supports. The actual stake pockets are most likely at the top of the longer supports so the bows fit in them.

Even easier: remove the troop seats and bolt planks to extended bow uprights.

Would be an easy field mod.

There is a picture of another CCKW with this mod in the Tankograd book, p43 top.
