Jeep woes after steering box rebuild

Well its a mystery. Had the steering box and column out on the GPW rebuilt and replaced it. Now it struggles to start up, if it does, its only with a jump start. Using the throttle linkage to control the revs it sounds as flat as a proverbial pancake. The exhaust glows red hot very quickly. We have not touched anything on the electrical side, just the steering assembly and while we were there the exhaust manifold. Any clues? Its almost as if the timing is out but we havent touched anything on the timing side.:???

Doh! Forgot to put the spring stop in for the riser. The lever for the riser needs to be in the up position when installed? As the spring stop isnt in the lever goes down, hence the symptoms for lack of power, blocked exhaust type of thing.

"Riser meaning heat control valve?" Yep, that's what i meant. You couldn't have dropped something down the front pipe could you? I'd be tempted to drop or loosen the front pipe at the exhaust manifold and try it. It will sound awful if it runs.... B ut would be a way of ruling out a blocked exhaust....

It has all the symptons of slipped valve timing, on start up if the morse timing chain is very worn, it has no tensioner, it can jump a few teeth and retard the valve timing, hence no revs and red hot exhaust, I've had exactly the same thing happen on several rover V8's that have the same morse chain, try advancing the distributor, if the engine runs better it will confirm whats happened, alas won't cure it, its timing cover off, new chain etc.

Its not at all related to the steering box or manifold work its just coincidence
