Braided metal sheathing on electrical cables in military vehicles

Is there much demand for braided metal sheathing as used on military vehicle harnesses and wiring looms.?

I know that as military vehicle enthusiasts we are used to having to source parts from all over that place , but if you need to replace some wiring that is missing, what is the best thing to use?

I would say probably yes as this is a key detail for those little details of originality.

i would like to know more about this.

Your message suggests you may know where to get some??? :cool2:

Its actually a metal sheathing that looks very very similar, but has a shinier finish. it expands and will take cables 8-12 mm or in the larger size 12 - 16mm.

I propose to run the required cable (ie rubber sheathed automotive flexible cable, with quite a few cores in it) through the sheathing to give an original look. This sheathing could be left as is , or painted over with aluminium paint to be near perfect). I am thinking of using it to replace some missing wiring on my rear lights.

I am investigating getting some gland ends for it so that a neat termination could be made into a box or switch.

Anyway , It can been seen online with a company called Canford Audio PLC www.canford.co.uk , they will sell it by the metre. Its called Chrome XC12 or XC8

It may be too shiny for the purist, but it may be better than boring old black rubber cable. If there is anything better available please let me know as I am soon going to buy some :-D

that stuff is not bad but it looks to have a rather open weave?

I bought some braiding which is identical in weave to the original at the Beaulieu auto fair, but as ever, there is a compromise as it has an orange plastic strand woven along its entire length (but hey ho only £1/M)

the stall also sold some neat end caps for it, but sadly they are no substitute for the original threaded gland caps and no way I can see (short of butchering an original one and brazing it) to get a threaded bit attached to the new end cap

I guess there are 2 similarities here!

There is the metal braided sleathing that is typical in some vehicles for coaxials / radio cables etc.

There is also the black material sheathing for electrical wires typical of old wiring looms, which I think is more like the product you may want for electrics.

I came across an electrical braided polyester sleeving in 5m lengths at Frost restoration, who are pretty well known worldwide.

They also do a wraparound sleeve and a metal sleeve as well!

Maybe worth a look before you comit to buy on www.frost.co.uk

Regards

You can get the braided cable sleeving from Farnell. Useful starting points are part numbers 4742953 (polyester) and 1302731 (tinned copper), alternatively you can use the category search "Cable, Wire & Assemblies > Cable Accessories > Sleeving & Heatshrink > Sleeving", then tick the 'Braided' box and 'Show Results' button to show you all 548 braided products.

Usually much cheaper than the specialist dealers, and you can buy it by the 30m drum if you have a big job on ;)

I've been looking for some myself. This is exactly what I need. http://www.adaptaflex.com/products.asp?ID=82

There are simpler and cheaper alternatives such as http://www.cabletec.com/Products/METAL_BRAID/cabletec%20HBT90%20Screening%20Braid.html

and http://www.polamco.co.uk/en/screenbraid

but I really need the former in the 20mm size. Unfortunately its a 25M minimum order and it's about £420.00 for the reel. I only need about 6 meters so does anybody have some or need some?

20mm might be larger than I need , I would be interested in some 12 mm ( ish ) as long as it doesn't break the bank - The stuff I was originally looking at is only abou £2 per metre. Yes I am a skinflint !!

I've been trying to track down some suitable wire sheathed cable for some work I'm doing on the IWM's Dorchester. The best that I've found so far is a heat resisting cable from Lapp Cable, its just a bit oversized for my aplication. In the past I've used some seperate woven steel sleeving (not sure where it came from may have been RS, I had it lying around after another project) over ordinary HO7 twin core, good for short lenghts but the sleeving was only in 1m lenghts.
