  1. I remember that picture Tony, but I always assumed it was vehicles arriving not leaving. The place was an absolute treasure trove; I recall a recovery operator needing a Hercules crankshaft for a Diamond T and being told where in the yard to start digging. Half an hour later he returned with a perfect NOS crank in a substantial packing crate that had lain undisturbed for many years. Owen Christiansen and Dougie were the backbone of the company and travelled miles to buy vehicles at various auctions and sales. Mike
  2. Absolutely correct 6x6; I didn't see the other one.
  3. Barry, I used to know Gordon quite well when he had the OX artic. Is my old Martian 10 ton GS OSU 809 still with the group? Mike
  4. Just heard from a reliable source that this is the newest surviving Crusader, 78AN15 having been broken up a year or two ago. Mike
  5. You could try Jacksons, they are showing some 22ply Goodyears as used on Militants. Stollies used 14 ply, Explorer had 18 ply. http://www.ljacksonandco.com/ Click on misc and then tyres. Mike
  6. Well almost, are the Koshbosh thingies not built (assembled) in Wales? The trailers are built by King at Market Harborough. It was a shame that Unipower failed as they had great plans to produce the tank transporter units when I visited the factory some years ago. At the time production of the 8x8 bridging units was in full swing, and doubtless a recovery variant was feasible along the lines of the MAN.
  7. I am going to stick my neck out and suggest that it is an ex-RAF one that has been shortened for use as an artic. Bridge plate, towing jaw, first aid box etc all suggest Military.
  8. That sounds familiar! There is one with a BT number at thread 73 of the Explorer section.
  9. Just had a similar discussion on the Constructor thread. My Explorer was originally RAF blue when new, then high vis yellow, then IRR when taken over by REME. Mike
  10. Mike, 00BT01 to 49BT99 (which includes this vehicle) cover receipts from other services, so it may well have been painted green and used by the RE or similar. A little more research reveals: Chassis no is 10571 and originally allocated to 53 Field Sqn (Airfields) 09/03/1966. The ACB was indeed taken over by the RE based at Waterbeach. The Constructor belongs to Chris Phillips. Mike
  11. 350 in the 6x6 and 8x6, 305 in the 6x4 tractors. Perkins (now CAT) Eagle mk3 which is based on the C series Shrewsbury built Rolls engines. Andy, if you PM me an email address I will send a pic that you can post to prove it arrived. Drove it 60 miles home with no probs, and they even left about 300 litres of diesel in the tank. Mike
  12. There is an even more impressive photo on page 94 of 'Breakdown', a Crusader dragging a burned out Antar/60ton trailer/SP70 howitzer using the underlift.
  13. Rick you may be correct although I seem to remember the Lancaster was assembled in Trafalgar Square?? The quoted price for a new Lanc was £40k, and a Spit was £10k. I assume you are talking about Wolverton Works not Netto:-D
  14. Have a look at one of these hole punches on ebay: 370067170053 Each punch has a small point that locates in your centre pop mark and the shearing action produces a perfect round hole with a work hardened edge that is ideal to use as a drill guide for the frame or second panel. Are you working in steel or aluminium, and have you considered the corrosive effect if the two are in contact? (Land Rover didn't):-D
  15. Would that have been the SOEC, if so I still have a few contacts?
  16. One sold on ebay for a similar if not greater amount a month or two ago so I suspect it is the going price. Some years ago I had 8 of these brand spanking new and struggled to get a tenner each for them :-(
  17. Works fine for me John, copy and paste to 'my pictures' then attach as usual. Mike
  18. Are we talking about the remote control tracked demolition buggy?
  19. abn deuce, did your book mention who picked up the tab for the airlift, I am unfamiliar with the economy of West Berlin in the years shortly after the war?

    Chinook

See:http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/seaking/specs.html Looks like 6000kg empty and if I saw the same photo they had removed the rotor.
  21. Just received an invoice from Witham so I rather gather I bought it with a cheeky bid of £4.5k less than suggested...... Bit new for this site but remember I went through the Explorer/Martian/Constructor phase back in the 80s. The T45 Roadtrain was the first LGV I drove commercially and I have always had a misguided soft spot for them - probably from smashing my head on the roof due to the rock hard suspension.:shake:
  22. Just a few, I bid on it in the Jackson sale where it stood with a blown diaphragm in one of the spring brakes but was outbid. I have just left a bid on one of Witham's ex RAF S26s which replaced the Crusaders for towing radar trailers, so watch this space:sweat:
  23. Sorry, cannot help, could it have been Brian Bailey:confused:
  24. Hi Jules, what engine is that in your Explorer?
  25. Don't encourage 6x6, he is bad enough already. I await his interpretation of the 'soul' survivor with bated breath.:-D
