  1. According to my list, ER and ES were used between 1965 and 1966.
  2. Well spotted, having owned a Martian for several years I should have known.:-D
  3. Andy, how do you manage it - look at my post 8 on this thread:yay:
  4. Anyone know the history behind this one? Could it be a prototype for a gun tractor? Looks like it has a Rolls C6 diesel and 12.00 tyres.
  5. An ebay special for all you Matador racers: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AEC-Matador-High-Ratio-Differencials_W0QQitemZ220250791624QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item220250791624&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A3&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
  6.:rofl: Good answer Tom, but as Andy has pointed out, they are designed for two totally different defence scenarios.
  7. I suspect the one man Stinger would run out of puff long before the 50 mile range of Bloodhound mk2.:???
  8. Correct, with fabricated wheelarches to cover the twin 14.00 x 20s. That was the easy question.
  9. I remember the one with the fogs, it was a 1982 build (2 years after Roadtrain production started), ex RAF Staxton Wold, no winch, about 6500 miles and still had the protective film on the door trims and headlining. RAF reg was 78AN14 and chassis was WHV63223 making it the last but one Crusader ever built. It was cast in 1996, disposed via Aston Down and finally sold at Jackson's tender sale in 2005. The civvy reg is now EPT 532X if anyone has seen it since.:-D
  10. Andy, there was a very nice ex ministry one for sale some years ago at a dealer in the Kidlington area. They look rather strange as most were built with an offset cab.
  11. Good photos 6x6, but here is a little brain teaser referring to King Arthur. 1. It is a mongrel, but what components is it made of? 2. Who made it? 3. Who bought it from the answer to 2? 4. How much did it sell for in the above sale. (I know because I was there!)
  12. The DAFT 85 has a removeable towing eye that fits into a socket on the end of the chassis. Sorry Degsy, didn't see your post!
  13. OK, I admit defeat after looking at the caption describing the Mk3 non recovery winch as a vertical Scammell type when it is clearly a standard horizontal type - do they not proof read these days?
  14. From a foreword written by my FIL for Francis Mason's Lancaster book, regarding the black paint: "Contrary to popular belief, the night sky is not black - particularly to anyone who has aquired night vision. The black paint was supposed to minimise searchlight illumination but was wholly ineffective in this respect; a coned bomber shone like a silver moth fluttering round a light bulb" He sometimes flew beneath the main bomber force as target marker/master bomber in a Mosquito, so I suspect he was quite correct.
  15. According to 'Tugs of War' the trials of multifuel 2AV690 and 2AV760 were carried out in 1965 using MK2 and Mk3 chassis. Apparently the trials were not a great success, the 760 seized after 948 miles on petrol and the 690 managed 5200 miles on petrol before misfiring. The reason given was severe detonation and piston damage due to the high compression required for diesel use. By July 1965 it had been decided that the concept was unsatisfactory and that production versions of the Mk3 would have a conventional AV760.
  16. Several low mileage Scammell S26 tractors, some UBRE refuelling kits, a couple of FH70s plus all the usual stuff. http://www.witham-sv.com/tender/
  17. That radiator relief valve looks very familiar:cool2:
  18. We too have had our share of incidents with the Poles, one runaway in the yard that destroyed a new Daf 85 cab and one trying to do a U turn in a narrow village that resulted in the demolition of a grade 2 listed dovecote. They were both sacked and were last seen holding up telephone cables 24/7.
  19. I wondered the same myself Mike and it appears that the auctioneers conveniently forgot to mention that the lots were subject to reserves and several were unsold. I believe the Roti was unsold at £11k but had an axle problem that again was not mentioned in the catalogue.
