  1. The guy that took the photos said that it was Alden in '66. I have no reason not to believe him. Cheers, Terry
  2. My images don't seem to have loaded. I'll try again...
  3. Welcome in. Where are you based? You'll probably change your mind about the DUKW when you see what sort of money they change hands for these days Cheers, Terry
  4. It's worth noting that any photos taken in Aden would have been in the 60s. Colour photography was pretty new then and accuracy of colours wasn't great; especially if the photos have been stored for many years before being scanned. As Clive stated, the spec for the time was light stone and deep bronze green - I have little doubt that there were variations on this in the field though. These photos were sent to me by a veteran that served in Aden. I don't own the copyright on them, but he did say that I could share them. Cheers, Terry
  5. Hi Clive, I knew you had connectivity problems, but by the way that you were talking about them, I thought you had those documents in soft copy. No stress. Cheers, Terry
  6. Thanks Clive, I've corrected the typo. If you can get me copies of those documents, that'd be great. Cheers, Terry
  7. Sorry, I forgot to include the fact that this list is from the Daimler Ferret User Handbook for the Mk 1 and Mk 2 of 1957, WD Code 12174. Depending on when in its service life you are kitting your Ferret out for, it may well be out of date and I would love to get my hands on a copy of a later list, for comparison. Cheers, Terry
  8. The early version of the 88 set box didn't have the small compartment on the side of it Construction wise, it's spot welded on. Cheers, Terry
  9. Hi All, From the Daimler Ferret User Handbook for the Mk 1 and Mk 2 of 1957, WD Code 12174. I put this together to check off what equipment I had, and what I was missing, but figured that it might be of help to others. The list does not (currently) contain information about the weapon specific and radio equipment that was carried. As it was transcribed by hand, with the assistance of a beer or two, there may be some errors in there. If you find them, let me know and I'll fix it up. 10. It says that you're replacing belts and hoses. There is no need to remove any armour to do that?
  11. My Saracen also ran horribly when there was an air leak from the vacuum tank.
  12. Faulty leads or a dodgy ignition coil will also cause these sorts of problems. Have you checked that the inlet manifold is bolted up to the head tightly? In general they are fairly simple and reliable engines - the carbs are known to gunk up a bit and usually benefit from a clean. There should be a small mesh filter inside the fuel banjo on the carb and you can also take out the jets and let any gunk drain out. Cheers, Terry
  13. What heavy stuff do you need to remove? The only thing that you should need to take out is the fan coupling, the belts will then slip through the gap...
  14. I believe that trophy160 has a Mk 6 Saracen. The early Saracens (Mk 1-3) used the same driver's periscopes as the Ferret: Periscope, No.17, Mk 1 FV29638 The later Saracens (Mk 5 and 6) used fixed vision blocks which, to the best of my knowledge, weren't used in anything else: The Saracen actually carried 5 of these, 3 smaller ones for the driver's side windows and one for the rear door, and 2 of the larger ones; one for the driver's front window and one spare. Ferrets, of course, also had a set of vision blocks/splinter screens for the side vision slits: Screen, thin, c/w glass block TL2776 LV2 FV55121 Block, triplex, 7 in. x 3 1/4 in. x 3/4 in. laminated LV2 TL2776 These weren't used by the Saracen, but if you have a spare one of those, I'd be keen to get it off of you. Cheers, Terry
  15. How much are you asking? Is it internally fitted for Bren or Browning? Do you have the pintle mount? Do you have the lid for the side bin? Cheers, Terry
  16. FYI, the old one had a crack in it and the plastic between the glass layers had degraded, so you couldn't really see through it. Once replaced, I thought that the best thing to do was to see just how bulletproof it was. One of the guys in the RAAF took it to work and they shot it during a range day with 1 x 7.62 NATO and 2 x 5.56 NATO. It shattered, but held together quite well.
  17. Tim Vibert, at Empire Trading. I bought 2 new ones, so that the spare bin wasn't empty...
  18. The problem that I've had with enquiring about Chinese products like that is the constant stream of semi-related emails that come through forever afterwards...
  19. I replaced the vision blocks in my Mk 5 Saracen, about 18 months ago. There should be a hand wheel on the threaded rod coming through the housing, and that provides the clamping force on the other side of the wedge - the threaded rod pulls the wedges together, which due to the inclined plane on the base, lifts them up and clamps the block. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers, Terry
  20. You can use either wire or split pins. My guess is that when it was done, the mech had some wire lying around and so used that... Proper use of lock wire requires some technique and some fancy pliers, so I always stick with the split pins Cheers, Terry
  21. We run about 70 ex military vehicles at the museum, most of which are WW2 or early post war and we only ever use the cheapest unleaded that we can find Cheers, Terry
  22. Looks like an April Fools joke that got some legs to me...
  23. I think most of the prices reached were crazy. Especially for some of the enamelled signs!
