  1. Thanks Neill I will join that forum and have a look. Not really my field in modelling BUT my Dad started work at Commer -Karrier in 1940 and except for 3 years in the REs worked there until 1980- So I have soft spot for many thinks Commer & Karrier. regards TED

  3. Fantastic, for several years I have been trying to put a date to a Karrier 4x4 aerodrome crash tender- built on the artillery tractor chassis- found the answer in about 30 seconds.
  4. The booms on both the QL & AEC started to appear just prior to the end of hostilities, But only the aircraft and revetment is BoB period in the kit. - The trucks and even the figures are wrong- they are depicted in battledress, BoB period for both ground and aircrew was the skirted jacket. TED
  5. Mike go into IWM collection search lots of period vehicles. The Albion refueller with 3 booms was developed specifically for fighter Ops, also in use trailer bowser - brockhouse torsion bar - at that time towed by Fordson tractor,; general use were Crossley and Albion 6x4 and Albion 4x2. also Fordson Sussex but most of those were with balloon command. Snipe utility, once delivered to dispersal ammo normally taken on a handcart to each aircraft. Ops for each sqn was normally the dispersal wooden hut connected to station Ops by land line, often supplemented with a brockhouse trailer with office body and penthouse extensions. on some airfield the trailer was the only accom on a dispersed site. Airfix do a fighter revettment, although the vehicles in the set are not of BoB period. BULL MODELS do a snipe, Matador do the Albion and other suitable items. TED

  9. Gents, My PC decided to dump/hide a file containing the leading particulars of the K2- K3 civil version- K3 militarised and K4 . If anyone has the relevant handbooks or info for the 1939 to 45 versions of these would they be kind enough to furnish me with details such as Wheelbases, and Track width. Many thanks TED
  10. We too ( RAF) have blue rings and stripes but gold on mess dress, so I reckon this is a RNLAF Wg Cmdr mess dress jacket. ted

Andy your trailer is a Brockhouse MK2 6 ton 4 wheel by John Brockhouse & Co Ltd They superceded the earlier 3 ton Mk1 which had torsion bar suspension, The MK 2 was fitted with a wide range of bodies including bowsers, workshops, offices kitchens etc etc. The same bodies could be fitted to the Eagle or the Fordson Sussex & WOTI 6x4 trucks.   14. For many years now it has been on display at the RAF Museum at Cosford. I believe the main museum at Hendon have numerous publications on the Crossley and copies can be oobtained although its a 4 to 6 week process. I will do a search tonight & see if I can ID any for you TED

Old grey cells I am afraid, I left there early jan 79 sorry I was leaving Bruggen in jan 82 My last tour was leuchars I too stayed in the next village -for the peace & serenity - except jet noise of course. my Lab is 13 I cannot imagine life without her . Returning to the helmet, I have several helmets in my stash of bits and bobs, I must go and dig them out, MODS sorry for subject drift TED
  16. re the liner, I was issued with a tin lid in Cyprus early 1973; The greek community was at war with itself and the big civil war clouds were looming. It had the same old style liner, It also had the same tarry looking marks as this one; Our Sqn received a crate containing 50 helmets, liner ready fitted stacked about 10 high. the black marks are from the liner of the helmet stacked above. We had to pull them apart and some of the liners were in a real bad state. Oh yes I forgot to mention it was painted a fairly bright blue colour, marked POLICE. It was of the old tommy pattern !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we quickly got hold of some matt black paint and gave them a couple of quick coats. The 44 pattern I was issued with at RAF Marham in 74, which I subsequently wore in thre 77/78 fire strike also had the early pattern liner. The liner was still fitted when I left Marham and that was 82- TED
  17. The desert colours are a huge subject, there were so many schemes, your 25 pdr could also be Portland Stone !!! it looks a little light for light stone. Without going into great chronological detail Light Stone which is still used today is your safest bet TED

Gents some great info thank you, Lesa Freathy has just put a couple of shots onto his album : Some years ago before I ever saw a picture of a guy ant tanker I made a model of one !!! hee hee how can that be you may ask ?   19. Hi Dusty, If you look at the various pictures of the Bedfords , the Ants and the Commer All have Food Flying Squad on the side plus the donor- which for some is H.M. Queen or a donor nation- The Queens Messenger Convoy mark was normally only on the "Luton Head " and in the case of the tankers on the rear. The Queens Messenger Convoy was coined from the first batches being funded by the Queen, but it appears on all pictures I have seen irrespective of the vehicle donor. My understanding is all the various canteens Salvation Army Church Army YMCA etc were funded by public donation and built by various bodybuilders. I recall reading somewhere that the government were tearing their hair out over all the hundreds of different ambulances and canteens being brought into use from donations due to the inability to source spare parts and keep them operational without causing upset to the donors. Thanks Dusty-- Have you a copy of HOME FRONT TRANSPORT by Alan HOUSE 305 pages of WW2 & post war home defence vehicle. there is a picture of a Commer canteen on page 250 - unfortunately Alan admits his vehicle recognition is not too hot-and he has wrongly labeled it as an Austin. Somewhere ? I have a picture of one of the WOA-2s delivering hot food containers to a rural location- I don't know if its a school or a location for Land Army/ Forestry Corps girls. There is a pic on the IWM site of a CMP 15 cwt in service delivering hot meals to a school. You can order the book from Hants fire & rescue HQ Alan was until recently Dep CFO . If I find the WOA-2 pic I will post it. TED

  23. The attached is a VERY poor scan I found on tinternet of BS 987 - I have only posted the part containing UK OD you will note at that time no other colour has a name. Its says Dec 44 = that date is when the BS issued an updated edition of the BS. SCC 15 UKOD was called for much earlier in reality. AMOs of june 44 and ACI of april 44 are the first formal orders but it would seem vehicles were being delivered in the colour by very early 44. Certainly RAF orders were often 3 months or more behind reality with the orders' contents initially being diseminated by telex signal or policy letter. TED ps as an aside just before the end of the war a second colour with a name was added SCC19 very dark OD for the far east.
  24. Yes beyond doubt; to this day they still vary slightly; Even IRR matt green varies and its very variable fade rate makes for some strange shades. And even the ultra expensive special products for aircraft suffer. As an aside, when we were mobilisaing for Gulf war one, we had to do some of our kit in 361 light stone, but stuff that was going to be used on airfield was mainly to be done in the now famous desert pink which was to FS 30279. We quickly ran out of depot stock of 361 , and the manufacturers had no hope of keeping up; from day one we mixed the pink to a formula because there had never been stock. so we were given mix formulas for both, paint was mixed in galvanised dustbins. It all started off well but as days and nights went by , with the guys and gals working 16 on 8 off there was some real cock ups and again some strange shades - remember the banana yellow fleets coming out of BFG ??? that no doubt was the result of similar experiences to ours.
