  1. I paid £1450 for mine, with a good 680 powerplus, about 18 months ago. This one sounds a bit steep to me. I always reckon on about £100 per ton then work up or down depending on condition etc.
  2. they are a bit long winded for youtube, I don't have a DVD writer, so making copies is a little more difficult than it could be...
  3. I have digital copies of the Scammell Recovery film (including trailers and Churchill recovery) and the Armoured Recovery film. There is nothing to identify the source so, if they are out of copyright, I don't see why we shouldn't share them around.
  4. Due to a slightly muddy slope the Americans wait for a Scammell to pull them up.
  5. "recovery vehicle" is a taxation class, which gives you an MOT exemption regardless of age but only allows specific use. For a Pioneer you will need proof of age but you can tax it as "Historic" (as long as you don't want to use it comercially) and still get the MOT exemption due to age. Granted, there are lots of people with different interpretations of the rules, but there are enough Pioneers about registered like this to set a precedent.
  6. I would go along with that but add "not used for hire or reward" My Explorer was taxed as a mobile crane, on a Q plate, before I got it. I went through the registration process, without any problems, to get an age related plate. The registration certificate came back as "body type = Breakdown Truck" "taxation class = Historic Vehicle".
  7. If you are driving something heavy and can't tell if the brakes are working without the benefit of a bit of paper should you really be driving it? If you are on the road, MOT exempt or not, the vehicle still has to be roadworthy. The MOT does not make something roadworthy, servicing does, so if something is exempt from test then the responsibility is with the driver/owner. If you are involved in an accident due to faulty brakes (as that is what we are talking about) it doesn't matter what bits of paper you have. That said, I suspect that the vast majority of us with vintage stuff are more likely to keep it maintained than some tradesman with a ten year old works van that only has a month of MOT left.

  11. One for the top end of the country for a change. BA Stores holds a working weekend every year in May (16th 17th this year) this is a good mixed show with working exhibits. We are trying to improve the military section of the show so anyone up in this area would be more than welcome.

  13. I reckon there is an option missing, "how the vehicle has been used for the majority of its' existance" much as I like, for example, Matador gun tractors I have a soft spot for timber cranes. I don't see why everything has to go back to military colours Dave Weedons Rotti looks great in Sunters livery and I know of a Diamond T in a shed, that hasn't been out for some time, that looks good as a civvy wrecker, it would be a shame to paint it drab again. People are forever wanting to know what the "correct" paint is for whatever vehicle they have got. It doesn't matter, paint your vehicle how you like, it isn't a "military vehicle" anymore.

  15. I can vouch for the existance of this, but am not prepared to say anything regarding its location out of respect for the owners privacy. It is however in good condition, safe and dry stored.
  16. Best bet is to pull the whole thing out and time it, as described in the handbook, with the drum empty. It is dead easy to do, but check that the timing isn't too far off as you pull the rope out, so that you don't overload the rollers.   17. I haven't had much to post on here for a while, mainly because I haven't done much to the Scammell other than pump lots of grease through it. I picked up a speedo cable from Chris Acock at Banbury Rally and have clocked up 435 miles since I fitted it. I did manage to get some better headlamp units with halogen conversions in, these are now fitted and much better than the old BPF units. There has finally been enough snow to go for a play in. :-D
  18. There was enough here last night to need the snowplough on my breakdown Gipsy... Once the yard was done I went for a play in the Explorer, I will put some pics on my blog.
  19. Nice to see that someone in London can drive in the snow. :-D I fail to see why a slight covering of snow causes so much chaos. There has only been a couple of inches here so far so nothing worth taking pictures of.

  22. It wasn't so much the act of swinging on the digger that was funny, it was the coverage it got on the news.
