  1. It seems that these winches were fitted to several different units over quite a long period. The early ones were rated at 8 tons then 10 tons for early Explorers and 15 tons for late Explorers. What was the maximum rating they reached, and how was it achieved other than changing the cut-out setting? I have read somewhere that the very early ones had a cast drum that was liable to split under heavy load and the drums were then changed to a fabricated design. Did the serving gear differ on the Pioneer transporter to accomodate the longer, narrower wire?

  4. As far as I am aware the trip used on the Albion is the same as the Pioneer,(mechanical link to injector pump). Are those four bolt holes not for the pressure roller on that side?
  5. I was told my BD number by both the Scammell Register and the REME Museum, the numbers were sequential with chassis number. I have been told by a couple of different sources that the winch plate was one of the last things to be stamped on the production line so gives a fairly accurate production date, the gap between the dates seems to support this.
  6. This type of winch was also used on Albion units. Here is the winch plate off my Explorer 01 BD 98 #7365, it's not many numbers away from Andis' so it would be interesting to see if the numbers match up, they don't seem to tally with the "wild" one, above. winch no. 252, date 2.10.51 There is also a patent no. on this plate, can that be used to find anything out?
  7. I can't make out the rigging well enough to work it out properly but I would tend to agree with Antar mike that there is a wasted return, the only reason I can come up with is that the Milly has been positioned against the bank to get a better anchor.
  8. I have been told that the limit is about four inches of exposed thread, otherwise the pivots are beyond their working range, mine are getting near to it. I have also been told that when you get to the four inch limit there is still pleanty of lining left and a spacer can be inserted to give a second life. This may be apocryphyl, I would be interested to know.

  14. however, according to my copy of TTOC "a trailer (other than a broken down motor vehicle) manufactured on or after 1-7-70 must have a pair of reflex reflectors of one of the following types" [triangular types illustrated] so if the landrover was older than this or broken down it wouldn't need them.:confused:
  15. :-D Sorry, there isn't a short simple one. Antarmike showed me a book called "the Traffic Officers Companion" by Gordon Wilson. (ISBN 07106 25693) it contains all sorts of rules and regs and is quite good. plus the picture of a Locomotive looks a bit like an Explorer. If the towing vehicle could be considered a locomotive. "mechanically propelled vehicle not constructed itself to carry load other than equipment for propulsion, loose tools and loose equipment" Motor Tractor UW not exceeding 7370kg Light Locomotive UW 7320kg to 11690kg Heavy Locomotive UW exceeding 11690kg you are allowed a width up to 275cm, explorer front axle is 263cm, I presume Constructor is similar. as a loco you are allowed 3 trailers, with some size retrictions as Mike pointed out. you do get into maximum weight and length issues but there is an exemption for towing broken down vehicles so probably ok if it has a meadows:cool2::-D If you go over width, length, weight you need to operate under STGO which is also covered in the book. Best bet is to get a copy and be able to show to the best of your knowledge you are legal and the average copper will hopefully decide it's not worth the paperwork and go after some chavs instead:-D

  20. I am not keen on shows that charge to exhibit, there is one up here the charges exhibitors but not the public. :argh: A working show is much more interesting than a static one. I like to have something more to do than just walking round. One of the steam guys up here once said "going to a show without an engine is like going to a wife swapping party without a wife" As far as the layout of shows go I prefer a less segregated setup, I can't see why wartime and postwar stuff should be split rather than mixed together. If there is a good mix I think makes it more interesting and more likely that you will see something different from your main interest. I would like to see better information boards on exhibits, or more people prepared to stay with the exhibit and talk to people about what it is. Not intrested in re-enactors, sorry. Too often it seems to be a closed display with not much communication as to what it is about. Tents. Ultimately it is a car and truck show, thats what I am going to look at so it doesn't matter what type of tent you have. If the is limited space I would rather see more vehicles with small civvy tents than a field filled with 9x9s. I suppose the extreme example of accomodation getting out of scale with exhibits is the stationary engine scenario, with a camper van to support a Lister engine with a water pump.

  23. I haven't done much since GDSF but I have been out collecting wood, some of which came out of Adams river which looked like beavers had moved in until we cleared it out. do you want this as a profile picture Adam?
