  1. A few years ago an Austin Gipsy club member scanned in the workshop manual as a rally freebee for club members, this has since turned up for sale on ebay, in a slightly tarted up form - fancy cover and a few photos. At the club AGM it was discused and decided that club members could have copies for the cost of postage. We did think about putting it on ebay for 99p to undercut the £15 version, but couldn't be bothered in the end.
  2. There is only one actuator for the rear brakes, but even without it the brakes will work (to a point, but you really have to stand on the pedal) the one of Andys' that looks bent is actually a cable. The design of the linkages and compensators allows the pressure to be evenly distributed to each wheel.
  3. I was kept going all afternoon, the Explorer was the oldest, biggest and noisiest thing there - the kids, of all ages, loved it.
  4. I have to agree with Bernard, nothing wrong with the brake system. As long as you take the time to grease it, it works very well, better than messing about with brake fluid and wheel cylinders. As with most things the best way to keep them working is to use them.
  5. Useful chart, thanks. We discussed OMD330 not that long ago... http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=12572
  6. Anyone wanting an entry form can now download them from www.bavintageweekend.co.uk entries should be in by Friday 24th April.
  7. here you go chaps, from 1955 technical handbook. OC600 = SAE140 OMD330 = SAE50 (engine oil) SAE90 (gear oil)
  8. Thanks again Richard, that is the conclusion I had come too but it is good to have a second opinion. What different flavours of oil have been put in it over the last 58 years is anyones guess though...
  9. thats why I posted the Bagger 288 link, not a walking dragline one:-D
  10. I like this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bagger_288 as we are restricted to tracks, for big and slow you can't get better than walking draglines :coffee:
  11. see this thread http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=10219
  12. Thanks Richard that makes sense, also explains why I can't find a military reference for SAE90 (non EP) If the only reason gear oil wasn't used was that it wasn't available, is there any reason not to use SAE90 in place of SAE50, as I would have thought a gear oil would perform better for the application?
  13. According to the manual for the Explorer the front axle, gearbox and transfer box use OMD 330. But what is it? The translation says that it is SAE 50 oil but I think that this may be incorrect. The only thing I can find on it from past threads is this; There are two SAE scales, one for gear oils and one for engine oils, that overlap. SAE 50 is in the top end of the engine scale, but is the same viscosity as SAE 90 in the gear scale. The difference seems to be the additives added to the base oil to make it most suitable for engine, straight gear or EP gear oil. If OMD 330 is specified for gearboxes why would you use SAE 50 engine oil rather than SAE 90 (non EP) gear oil?

  15. Diesel isn't that difficult to burn, a farmer I knew used to soak a bale in diesel so he could get piles of old tyres to catch.
  16. The vertical winch on Explorers was, afaik, date stamped at the end of the production line, see http://www.hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?t=11145
  17. all this bull is way off topic
  18. Fantastic! 73.8mph in the Explorer. It was in Cornwall last week, so that explains why I haven't got any money - spent it all on diesel...
  19. Interesting reading Mike, I was unaware that there was so much misinformation circulating.
  20. The Pig belongs to Adam Elsdon (Best Man) more pics to follow, when I get a chance.
  21. Latest news isn't about the Explorer, although it made an appearance. Me and Jen got hitched yesterday:yay::yay::yay:
  22. Great news Mike, good to see that all the frustration, expense, effort and hours are paying off. See you in the Playpen :-D
