  3. I had in fact considered purchase, get it operational for a remote garage / workshop that I have - I use a Kawasaki portable that meets my lighting needs and does not need (always non existent) floor space. Apart from that , I left the WW2 scene (Jeep) 35 years ago to concentrate Land Rover. At the time this genny turned up, I doubted if a better example could be found if somebody wanted it , nobody ever PM'd me. As I said , my opinion was somebody would wish to have it as added interest to tow along as part of a display as part of load..
  4. It seemed to me that this would make a easy tidy up and addition to somebody's WW2 collection , truck bed or trailer mound for show display - seems to me that it has to have tracks , wheels & own motive power to interest ??
  5. About 2 years ago , I showed several photographs of one complete and in nice condition. Turned up near to me having been taken out of a local cinema in part payment for work done. It had to me been in storage in quite dry conditions - unlike all WW" era. stuf I have viewed in over 40 years. The new owner considered it of some value (as I did) . However the forum opinion was that it was not rare and more or less scrap value , I advised the owner - so possibly it ended up skipped ?
  6. So , what exactly is the Solihull colour more or less Eau de Nil that Rover used on engine castings after grey (whatever shade that was) until the introduction of the red colour on 5mb blocks (that I have seen described in a book as Terracotta Red , I would have to check - it may have been a Haines) .. Talking Eau de Nil shade , not the Sky Blue / Duck Egg Green LoL that the MOD used as a engine re-finish.
  7. I was in fact correct with spelling first time , mowOg , the common term for the paint colour .
  8. Actualy - I spelt it wrong , it was mowAg On the Series ONE Club Forum , from when the forum started up - there has been a long long thread about the type of paint from inception , and of course the colour question crops up in great great detail (thgis was more to do with the colour that preceded DBG). I do know from 1970's "original" Land Rover touch up tins & aerosols - just had the words Bronze Green. ------------------ I don't like to quote the author / publisher Pat Ware too much. However if you look in his book 'QUARTER TON' (1996) (that I rate far better than some of his books in more recent years). Page 99 When military contracts began to dominate the production lines from mid-1949, the colour was changed again to the standard military 'Deep Bronze Green' regardless of whether the vehicle was intended for military or civilian use, since it seemed easier to paint all the vehicles the same colour. --- I can't recall if this was accepted as a tablet of stone..
  9. BMC engines were painted MoWoG Green weren't they ??? IIRC the early move to Bronze Green was called "Bronze Green" DBG and shades of came a bit later LoL
  10. The buffers are very small , abt. 5/8" dia. They tend to get knocked off. This shows the taper on back edge of later seat base cushion. This looks like a early seat base cushion (squab) but late 1970's because there is no top-stitch. ------------- Late construction , this is exactly as Solihull trim-shop did them , however I don't think they actually did the late squabs , due to pressure from early Disco trim , it was contracted out & the stitchers could not do top-stitch . You will not find this superior stitch on late squabs. Early squab construction. ------------- ---------------- If you have retainers for later seats , then you must be on a "change point" - I think. I will check a truck for colour , this can get a bit complex. IMHO , the Black vinyl , even on "genuine" seats was not the same quality as the Charcoal , in any case - I have often changed early Black on L'wts to Charcoal & keep the Black for spares because I have KA , KB & KC's It may pay you to sign in on Ex-MLRA Forum , a few years back - I did a thread on marine-ply bases , early & late alloy seat/bases / tank covers & a potted history of L'wt seating. I will try and find the thread link but the "Search Facility" is not easy to use. Early seat screw-on alloy lids , actually Early (late) because they are pop-rivet assembly - not spot-welded LoL ===== This shows the all important prong location , I make a repro out of Stainless Steel , there is no Land Rover part No. they did not last long , mild-steel & broke across the cs'k holes. Hence later squabs always float around , the rubber buffers come off & leather straps are never tensioned right. Bit more info. here on site belonging Dave McCarthy http://www.land-rover-lightweight.co.uk/Seats.html
  11. If only it were that simple LoL I see you have FFR 54HG82 RHD FFR production 1980/81 on Contract FVE22A/115/6 Now from the same contracts - I have 52HG33 (Dis 1980 so manuf. a little before) and I think I also have 55HG43 that I believe was 1981. These were the first with VIN (14 digit) starting LBBA , IIRC after this Contract they were 17 digit VIN starting SALLBBA There were quite a few changes on HG production , Original Lightweight type axles and some hybrids leading on to the Rationalized axles. Almost certain they all had 10" front drum brakes. I also have 12 volters 50HG75 (DIS 12/80) AND 48HG31 (DIS Oct. 1980) Now seating came in for a few changes , the original Charcoal with top-stitch had gone the Burton , the new style seat base cushions had come in . These had retainers on the seat base , with a loose locker lid over the tank (the thick alloy plate screwed to seat base cushion was gone) . The new seat base cushion introduced has a slightly different profile with small rubber buffers front , leather strap at front , the rears have prongs (I doubt if you will ever see all this) , there is no doubt whatsoever at this stage the vinyl was CHARCOAL and manuf. by Wardle Storey at Lancaster. I am certain this is how the two twelve volters always were , I obtained them 1986 at very low mileage and I knew them when they were from new at a local TA Depot. Alsdo - I have the factory build up parts sheets LoL Can you look at your seat bases , I don't think yours will have "retainers" , there are angle brackets to keep the base cushion in location, description / photographs of tank lids etc. would help positive ID Further I am certain they would be original style seat-base cushions , I think they would have been CHARCOAL but would need to check a truck. There is a very slim change they were originally black , however that may have been during HH ,, - KA were black. Another thing you could check - I am almost certain you will have the first stage of the FFR modification to seat-base , this has the new battery box with cover secured with spring clips rather than the older wing-nut securing (these did not have cushion retainers).
  12. http://d1ed2vcldue1cv.cloudfront.net/landy/mil/lfig132.gif Small feed wire (probably brown) genny to starter solenoid , above fast tick-over , I think I would be looking for at least 28 volt (terminal to earth) (anything less and you are not going to push anything into two sound 12 volt batteries) , over 29.5 volt and it would be overcharge. Check all tight & clean.
  13. Well - you are then talking about a armoured car which a Land Rover was not (excepting such as a Shorts). I understand there was only abt/ 6 or 8 real Para Recce Lightweights , don't know of any similar SAS Lightweights ? The VPK NI kits gave a reasonable protection (other than culvert mines) , one or two men for rifle top-cover - then better to quick de-bus and rely on abt. 4 men for accurate rifle fire. Would the cone-of fire of such as the Aden 109" truck be of any practical use ?? I once trawled through the Britains Small Wars Website - looking for this info, you would have to go back as far as S1 LR's and then I guess they had adapted as a swop over from Jeeps & Champ. There does seem a British Army policy that was not deviated from until the 1970's and that was just the few Para Recce Lightweights (until somebody turns out documentary / photographic evidence) ..
  14. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2465372/How-SAS-Dads-Army-planned-sabotage-Nazi-invasion-Britain.html Some interesting reading alone !
  15. Supposed to be a in-service photograph , obviously posed. Chicken wire & scrim , interesting - a rare 3 colour DP , middle-east - Cyprus ?
  16. A few years earlier A&SH , bracketry could soon be adapted to S2A Rover 1 , possibly not as gunners seat seems a special ? 88" in the background - is that a pintle mount in doorway LoL dunno - seems some sort of bollard or mast ?
  17. Thanks for the replies. I ordered that landrover 1/2T book by M.Cook (Amazon has them). I understand that the Military LRs would have had brackets for the Soldier's personal weapons but it looks like with the exception of the SAS, recce & WMIK landies, the average vehicle wasn't "armed". Your last response - quote. --------------------- Depends on what you mean by "armed" and average vehicle , generally (and I have Solihull factory build up sheets for some contracts). Specified were two qty. Universal small arms clips Rover part number 348943. (these are the better type of spring clip lined with roughish leather) These came under Misc. Stowages and Equipment and were "AD" (additional) Intentioned for the drivers personal weapon , that would in most cases be a SLR , from my TA days - I don't recall a Sterling SMG being a good fit. Listed also are the brackets & all fixings. Designed so all fits OK with a Unitary Radio Kit Installed. You will find the odd photograph of after-fitment on passenger side bulk-head (this is on a Para Recce) the pic with a helicopter also. Never seen a in-service genuine shoot-em-up Walt photograph , the odd one probably existed that was not a Para recce , if you can find & display a photograph - then no doubt there will soon be hundreds of retro-fit on the show scene as a must have original authentic LoL Joking aside , having walked every month down lines of hundreds at MVS (Litchfield) and auction sites private & Ruddington - don't recall any evidence of drilled holes / traces of mountings that you could say was a gun mount. Only ever seen one Para recce at CMA Maltby, Teesside Auction and it was stripped and then stripped again of most thingies other than the odd basket .. You mention a pre-pro photograph , this would be a factory publicity staged shot. You will not find any pintle gun-mount in the MJC book , you could always go to the Ex-MLRA Forum and ask MJC direct ,,
  18. Hi Dick - you sticking with introductions ? http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?40189-Hello-from-a-Land-Rover-nut-with-experience-of-other-vehicles
  19. Yes, I have that book - purchased it more or less to read the Chapter 4. "Nazi Leaders" , the rest of the book was a very good read.. 1978 , took the author a long time to get around to writing it , gives time to crib / plagiarize, that is why I like the books written about the time of the happening. For me the fewer credits & notes the better !
  20. The book :- What Hitler Wants by E. O. Lorimer Here is a review , the reviewer gets a little wrong , inc. saying he - when in fact the author was a she. I believe this was sort of a best seller leading up to WW2 because it explained the deficiencies of the English translation of Mein Kampf + the author knew Germany well at the time, so quite a few British people were in the know. One thing that did amuse me was the author stated she could not know where Hitler received his finances very early , sufficient to set the ball rolling . Well she had not read the book by Kurt Ludeke first published in 1938 "I Knew Hitler". I think she actually credited the book , so how well did she read it ? , in any case Ludecke was a liar in part . If she could have read books by Ernst Hanfstaengl prior to WW2 - then she would have been even wiser. However IMHO Hanfstaengl wrote a good book , and a good book about Hitler & those close to him - but concealed much about himself, with the exception of possibly Hess - Hanfstaengl was as close as they got and that probably includes Eva Braun. http://www.librarything.com/work/328777/reviews
  21. 'How and why did the German people follow Hitler?' you could do a lot worse than read this one..... You asked the question , well IMHO there were German "Hitlers" around before Adolf , it is just that Adolf was around at the right time (the earlier Hitlers were dead or coming up to retirement) . How and why did the German people follow Adolf - well that is sort of debatable , I would say he managed to get to the front (wangled democracy) and be accepted as the "superman" - well he did once say that he had seen the superman , possibly in his mirror ? I have to say - I have never read Mein Kampf , possibly if I could get a full English translation in full (apparently the problem is 1/3rd content is no use). I do have this book (interesting because it is dated 1939) , that explains fully this problem :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Hitler-wants-eo-lorimer/dp/B000N2X7BE Anyway - I probably have a good idea of the contents of Mein Kampf There were books around pre WW2 asking the same question you have in 2013 - 'How and why did the German people follow Hitler?' I find these books printed before WW2 much more interesting than the modern works (although sometimes they turn out new info that is reliable). Hitler did not like this book , fortunately there is free English translations on the internet :- Bevor Hitler Kam http://www.scribd.com/doc/18941614/Bronder-Before-Hitler-Came-A-Historical-Study-English-Translation1975 ------------- A bit of heavy reading LoL - then try :- The Roots of National Socialism 1783 - 1933 by Rohan D'O Butler (published abt. 1941 , so a war-economy hardback, rare & difficult + expensive to obtain in good condition). Prussians - well yes, however for all the British , Dutch & American financers - Jim Marrs told a good story - The Rise of the Fourth Reich: The Secret Societies That Threaten to Take Over America http://www.amazon.com/The-Rise-Fourth-Reich-Societies/dp/0061245593

  23. This reveals just a little more, I would be interested to know a little more , are there designated named descriptions for the British DP's to differentiate the colours used ? http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?150728-British-Armed-Forces/page60 I suppose this scheme may be related to training or to blend better with the range colours ?? Is it a local decision ? At what military executive level ?
