 A particularly nice touch is the new deep bronze green furniture decor in the rear clubhouse bar, beats that drab O.D. canvas
  2. In fact its just like machinery we have parked up for a few years which always had red in - the dye seems to lose its red colour and it goes oily.

Wow - what an improvement!:banana::banana: What did you do Joris - did you undo something Jack had done, or redo something Jack had undone?
  4. Your description reads exactly like a tank of classic 'mature' red diesel - had it often with 'new' old plant. It goes brown and seems more oily than fresh diesel. Never had any problems with it - just keep diluting with fresh 'red' :-D

No way. Taken 5 minutes and a lot of patience / re-trying to get at 3 new posts. Surprisingly I managed to get into the 'reply to post' page to this thread fairly fast though. edit: Also posted up instantly :-D!!

Just tried accessing new post by Vulture - took ages and came up with 'connection lost'. Back paged, got index page and clicjed again - instant access to new post. Clicked this thread, took 15 sec or so to upload - clicked reply to post and took about 20 sec to access. Hope my logging of what's happening is of use - must go and do some work now. p.s. some smilies still not loaded up with reply to post page :cool2:

Just pressed page refresh while on new posts page (computer had been sitting with tis page open for 8 minutes) and after a long wait got 'no matches to search' and was logged out. Logged back in and got index page.Clicked onto a new post (Joris at 08.21) and got the page in skeleton form (photo showed ok). Also noticed three of the right hand smilies had not loaded up again. Odd.

Page forward / back now ok too - but just tried to reply to this thread and lost connection again (retrieved thread immediately by hitting BACK arrow and got it 2nd attempt. I'll log off the site and try again in 15 minutes and see if smilies function works.

Joris - speed of iinitial upload much improved, but for me: 1) If I try to load previous page of thread the connection usually drops out. 2) Smilies list on right displays ok now but they will not upload onto post. Look - now working just 5 minutes later! 3) 'More' smilies page doesn't load. But it does now - odd. I wonder if the smilies are taking a long, long time to upload - could this be the delay problem we've all been experiencing? Maybe worth investigating? Tony

And there was me thinking the one main benefit of life in Dorsetshire was the relatively slow pace of everything. ??? (major smilies failure still)

Well to be honest (and I really do appreciate the efforts you are all putting in to it, mostly unseen by us all) - I'd have to describe it as being so annoyingly slow, unpredictable and full of gremlins as to be effectively unusable. I still suspect it might be a question of the more sensitive your antivirus software the more problems you experience. Any significance in the fact that it has just loaded up without the grinning smiley amongst others? (there should be a 'fun' smiley here but got hacked off with trying to load one up...). Don't know what to suggest - out of my depth with this one! If it was an old army vehicle I'd suggest putting a big diesel in it, bigger tyres, a more modern gearbox or all three. In its current state it is in danger being parked up in the back of the yard behind all the other long-term restoration projects (there should be a 'sad' smiley here but got hacked off with trying to load it up....). And then of course bits get taken off it to keep others going etc. Sorry but you did ask. I certainly don't envy you the job of trying to sort it out. I'll get back to Clubhouse latrine duty then shall I?. And I've just spent the best part of 40 minutes trying to post this up - talk about frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. I would have thought France. Just a few of them appear to be worn (see lower front stacks). Also if in USA they would probably be in a warehouse :-D. Maybe in countryside behind the D Day beaches, where many supply dumps were set up?
  15. Richard - I recall reading an article by Mack and Constructor driver Stan Wass (but not in his excellent Wheels & Tracks No. 62) that the M.O.S. drivers were restricted to so few miles a day that they had often reached their limit by 11am and had to park up for the rest of the day!! So speed was not of the essence, many gradients being tackled in low. He describes the abilities of the Mack on this job in some detail in W&T 62, I'd recommend it. Anyway, doesn't a 5 speed box with 2 speed transfer make 10 gears? :cool2:
  16. I can help jog your memory :-D AWD, using a P6 engine and Commer Superpoise cab. Dorman 6 cyl engine in van driving two underslung props to blowers. Axles look like Bedford but transfer box remains a mystery. Will have a set of running gear - or complete chassis cab less engine - available soon if anyone can make use of it. Usual caveat re. scrap price applies!
  17. OMG I had to look twice - thought it was GHOSTBUSTERS :cool2:

Watch out there - the Dodge ambulance is being signwritten right now........
  19. The plot thickens. I guess its probably too late to ask you - if you do end up burying his GMC, whether I could take the spare wheel carrier off first? (He wouldn't mind would he? I can sell it to Howard for good money....).
  20. And what about every GMC owner's pact to be buried with his truck? No, I'm sorry, but this behaviour is unacceptable. I urge you to either dig another hole (if the patio is big enough) and bury the GMC alongside R3 - or dig R3 up, give him a good shower, and work out your differences.
  21. And once yesterday when I entered the clubhouse all the posts came up without any smilies. I went out the front door, had a pee up against a Weasel in the car park, came back in and the smilies loaded up with the posts. Wierd or what?
  22. Is there a CYBER GREMLIN in the Clubhouse cupboard? Whilst trying to upload a photo attachment from my computer the anti-virus thing closed the connection suggesting a malicious program was trying to access my machine. Had this before in the past. Also, talk about slow - accessing the Forum today has been about as much fun as trying to start a 6v WW2 U.S. truck with a flattish battery, modern petrol and a dodgy coil. Quite often recently just opening up the Smilies page causes all manner of wierd things to happen. Are these things connected I wonder? Just what has Jack or Joris got locked away in that cupboard?
  23. No present delivery this year then... You could have chosen a Xmas video card with no violence like this peaceful winter fishing scene - turn the sound right up to hear the clicking reel.......
  24. The Explorer isn't the only vehicle to use this axle layout - Moxy dumptrucks used an identical drive for a while (although Scammell must surely take the design credit). They'll go crazy places too, just like the Explorer :-D In fact the dumptruck drive layout was first used by KOKUMS, a Scandinavian company. They were bought out by Volvo to get them out of the market (yes, they were good!). At some stage Kokums or at least the dumper designs were taken over by Moxy, who adopted the walking beam rear bogie. In 1991 Moxy were taken over by Komatsu - the Explorer style bogie continued in favour for some time, but I believe all now use a conventional 3 axle layout. And so the Explorer 'dumper derivative' seems to have finally passed into history! All we need is evidence that the guy who ran Kokums had an ex Army Exlporer in his shed, and the evolutionary chain is proved!!!
