  1. Niels, That last photo should be a Caption Competition, my go first........... " Soldier, holding the Carrier up, to Officer " Don't just stand there looking, jump on the other side" :-D :-D :-D
  2. Hi Richard, You could try John Walker, I have just rebuilt an Austin engine and he supplied the gasket sets, not sure if he has them separate though. His number is 0115 9607860
  3. Dan, The 5 positions on the Multilift switch are as follows; AUTO - this is the normal operating position, engaging both hook arm and main frame rams through the proximity switches. Man HA - this operates hook arm rams only, used when there is a fault in electic circuit, such as the proximity switches. Man MF - same as above, but only operates main frame rams. Man Trans - used after a manual operation to de-pressurise the rams. AUX - use this when supplying power to another DROPS with disabled LHS
  4. A lot of the 8x4 16 tonne Fodens had the army rego with letters GB, which denotes 1973-74. But...I am not sure that is the build or in-service date in this case. ( Could have been when they were ordered) Memory serves me that I started work with the Army at that time and these vehicles had not arrived, in fact it was several years after this date and there was a shortfall in heavy GS trucks, so much so that WW2 Leyland Hippos were drawn from storage depots until the Foden arrived.
  5. Well, in answer to Clive's original post, concerning military books. A manual is usually a book telling you how to do a task, not just for vehicles, but covering anything. Not all books produced for the military would have been "how to" types, so they would be Publications as a general term. The Americans call their books concerned with engineering matters, TM, meaning Technical Manual.
  6. As far as I am aware, it is only trailers that have white / clear reflectors to the front.
  7. Is your ISPC the correct one for your vehicle? Your Saracen may even have been updated on rebuild at some point. You could contact Banister's, who once owned it, as they are extremely knowledgable on these vehicles and might be able to throw some light on your question. regards, Richard
  8. Hi Tony, And Wally should know more than anyone, so it looks like the photo I posted of a WOT6 engine, was not far off then. I can now remember some V8 engines from Balloon winches, that we had in for repairs (late 70's) and engine and gearbox were as your photo, in colour.
  9. I think Pete even spoke at one point.
  10. Any re-numbering could have been due to a new chassis being used, in the past when I was with MoD, if we changed a chassis on a L/R, it made no difference. Another reason for re-numbering is that a vehicle was constructed from parts. All this has happened after my time there, so only assumptions.
  11. Robert, Ah, I see what you meant, I was assuming entering a vehicle. I think there is an allocation of a certain number of free tickets for club members coming as visitors, at least that is what has happened in previous years, you have to apply for them. I think your memories of late 90's would have been when it was the IMPS show, things altered when it was taken over.
  12. You have to have been a member for the last two years, if I recollect, Robert.
  13. It only has one HT lead from what I can see, with the handle, it was probably fixed to a bench and used to light a welding or cutting torch.......old trick
  14. I think you must mean "Rover 8" mortar kit. I was thinking it was a Mk8 Mortar at first. The Rover 8 was a Land Rover 1/4 ton 88" Series 2a from the early 1960's and I seem to recollect a mortar kit could be fitted in the rear body.
  15. I've seen a few who have got their Scammells stuck...........might have to find the photos
  16. Seen today, a WW2 jeep with gun mount and no canopy driving East on the A28 out of Tenterden. Anyone on here? Must have been a damned cold drive !
  17. Hi Ken, For Bedford QL axles, front and rear ; HOUSING and Bearings assy., axle spiral drive pinion, inc. Bearing, taper roller SKF2K44156/3K/44348 Hope this is of help to you. regards, Richard
  18. You could always liner the block and bring it back to Standard size, just depends on what piston sizes are available.
  19. Hi Simon, The brake system on your Ferret should be normal DOT4 brake fluid.............most certainly not OM13 or any other mineral fluid. If the wrong fluid is used it can swell the seals, I would strip all the cylinders and check for any internal corrosion, then renew the seals. Clean and flush with methalayted spirits. regards, Richard
  20. Hello Simon, If you have released a bleeder and all brakes have released, then as you say, master cylinder or servo. To eliminate the master cylinder, check to see if the piston is stcking, this would show up by excess pushrod clearance. I somehow doubt this is the problem as once it was pushed down, it probably would not return. so this then points at the servo. Have you tried operating the brakes without the engine running? If they do not stick then, try with the engine running and if they stick, then it looks like the vacumm side of the servo is at fault. A process of elimination.
