Thanks for the info. it is quite an early one then. That will make me feel even worse if I do break it. I have spoken to the chap selling it again and it is not a bad price. I will try and buy it tomorrow. Bet i end up keeping the thing. but it must be fate as its only 3 miles away.

That did occur to me as well, but i thought no one could be that stupid living in the north of England ! I hate the idea of breaking it, but its just too much of a job for me to take on and with no body its just not worth it. I will do everything in my power to sell ALL the parts and make sure as little as possible ends up in a Chinese power.

This old girl has just turned up 3 miles from my home, I had a quick look around it today. There is no cab roof, no body, but it only shows 18000 miles on it. It look like someone started to restore it and did not finish. im going for a good look around it tomorrow and to talk about how much. It looks like a project too far for me and I may well break it if I do buy it. I will keep you all posted. Can anyone date it for me ? Chassis number is O860 111 Cheers

And Layland nicked all of AECs best ideas and then shut down Southall, When were the last TL12s (turbocharged AEC AV760) made? was it the very late 80s or early 90? Even the very last AECs were a class act, Shame Layland made them rush the v8 into production too early.

Im taking the Matador, lets hope for better weather than we had at Chipping the other week. Im also hoping that the lovely Mk1 Militant from Clitheroe is coming. Does anyone know its owner?

So is anyone going this year (2011), I am taking the Matador. I expect it to be wet and muddy, but i have been looking forward to it for some time and i have nothing better to do.

My second favourite Land Rover, I had a 1949 not too long ago. The only real problem with 80s are they wonder to much if they are early ones with the front spring swinging shackle at the front, The heaters are crap and they don't have the V8 burble. 101 parts are also far cheaper (apart from front shocks).

If you are into your Land Rovers, why dont you get a 101. They are the most fun Land Rover ever made.

I did my Matador yesterday and used 12 LTRs. so as already said, i would buy 15 LTRS

Mine has had a repaint, not quite finished yet. As i have not been able to find out any of the history for my MAT, im going to have to choose some regimental markings. Any got any good ideas?

Doubt the Matador would manage more the 9 MPH with 10 ton behind it anyway. Would it be legal though? As the Matador is not plated, what is the legal max weight it can tow?

Could I legally tow an FH70 behind my Matador? Is a gun classed as a trailer? And is it too heavy for the Matador? I would not be going far with it.

I am rebuilding a high speed front axle so that my Matador will have the same ratios both front and back, so im after some help again. Could anyone that has a parts catalogue for Matadors be so kind as to look up whether the wheel/hub bearings are the same on trackta joint and Rzeppa joint front axles. could anyone also give me some details on the front hub oils seal. Thank you.

Ether is awful stuff, it is only meant to be used in severe cold conditions (minus 30-40). If a diesel engine will not start in the cold we have been having here, there is something wrong with it. Could be lack of compression, poor cranking, poor injection or poor pre heaters/cold start devise not working. The problem with ether/easy-start is that it is very volatile and causes very high compression in the cylinders, this leads to broken rings and increased starting problems. If your diesel engine wont start in the cold, figure out why and fix it. This stuff will only make your problems worse. Thats why people say its addictive to engines

I remember seeing a Matador with a TK cab in a lovely old school HGV breakers in Ross on wye in about 1990. i wonder if it was the same one?

I must have read about 100 pages on the internet about paint in the last few day. I would like to buy some circa 1944 Khaki Drab paint to paint my Matador with. some people seem to think it is the same as Olive drab, but i would like the correct Khaki drab. HELP Where can I but it Or what is its paint code. Cheers

Thought it was about time to bump this thread. This was the first Matador I ever really noticed. It belonged to the Gloucester West Midlands Farmers who auctioned it off in 1987 (I think). It was sold to a chap from just north of Newent who had a collection of Matadors, mostly timber tractors. I kept track of it for a number of years and tried to buy it several time. I have not checked on it for a number of years now, anyone know if it is still there. It was a very fine example and was totally original. The only thing that had been done to it was to paint it, it had never been registered. I wish I had made a note of the chassis number.

I have a couple more questions for all you Matador or ex Matador owners. I take it that its is normal for the cab to move a bit? The top of the cab move about 1/2 an inch back and forth when I go ever a large bump. I dont think I should worry as its a wooden frame and its going to move a bit isn't it? The timber look good. Also the oil pressure is showing 40 psi when started cold and never goes above this. when hot its 17 psi at idol and 40 psi at full revs. is this OK? I also take it that big end and main bearings are like rocking horse do doos. Thanks Dan

Certainly not in bad condition. Was restored about 20 years ago and just need tidying. It runs very well and everything seems to work.

Well the Beast is now mine. First job will be to rebuild the high speed front axle and get that fitted. I plan to give it a good check over and do a few shows with it this year, then get it back looking as it should over the winter.

Thanks all for your help, I wont be bringing the said beast home for at least 2 weeks, im going to move it on a low loader as it has been in a nice warm shed for the past 6 years and i really need to check it over before it goes near a road. Im sure that when i get it home i will have a list of bits that i need thats as long as my arm. at the moment i really want to sort some sticks out as it just does not look correct without a roof on the back. I will post a picture of it as soon as the cash has been paid. I have to admit to feeling like im 16 again, I can think of nothing else. When i bought the MK3 Militant, i was really looking for a Matador but found the Milly whilst looking.
