  1. You aren't going mad- Mythbusters tried it! They concluded- with the "pig test"- that although a snapped winch cable would not sever limbs, it could cause pretty severe damage; unlikely to be fatal (but that was a possibility), but extremely painful nonetheless. Not gonna enter the argument 'cos I don't know diddly squat about winching :-D
  2. Apparently Southern Electric (SEB) bought 14 of these in the early 1980's, so there may well be some in the UK that have actually worked here, as opposed to recent imports. So says a friend of mine who is a bit of a SEB nut (no, I'm not sure why either) anyway. Don't think he has any photos sadly.
  3. Me again... We are back in the same boat unfortunately. Not through any fault of ours- the owner of the Land Rover's current storage is emigrating! Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm now permanently back from uni, so in Gloucestershire (near Stroud/ Stonehouse). Anywhere near there, Oxford/ Swindon or even Manchester (the three of us are rather spread out!) would be great. Doesn't need to be inside- corner of a field would do for now!
  4. That's absolutely brilliant- congratulations on getting it running and driving. I can't believe how good it looks after 20 years as a hedge- they certainly built these old girls properly.
  5. What a lovely looking machine (killer mouse eaten tailgate excepted). Seriously envious.
  6. There's a short video report on the BBC news website; including a burnt out barn. I did hear (but not having visited, can't confirm) that this may have been where the 100 tonner was kept.
  7. Just heard this morning, I can't find it reported anywhere else on this forum. Suspect this may be the end for a large number of historic vehicles, MV and not. http://www.herts24.co.uk/home/firefighters_tackle_blaze_at_scrapyard_1_466026 (Info and news link from the CCMV Yahoo group)
  8. Oh wow, that's a wonderful collection- and a lot of extremely restorable looking vehicles- it'd be terrible if they went for scrap. I want to take one of the Matadors home (0854 refuellers?) and give it lots of love and cuddles.
  9. That would explain it- ta! Union street ain't *that* bad- mostly students and drunk kids these days. It is extremely grotty though!
  10. Quite often see something similar to that ( I know nothing about modern MVs so no idea what it is) trundling around Plymouth under it's own steam. Generally looks like they are just out for a play, only appears when the sun is out...
  11. Serves you right for buying the inferior option :-D Actually, I rather like Gipsys, but winding Gipsy owners up is always fun...
  12. Walking back from the nightclub where I met her at about 3 in the morning- passed a toyshop with a Hornby trainset in the window "I've got one of those" says I... I'm not quite sure when she became converted, but she got in yesterday after going home for the weekend by train and said "ohh, I saw something interesting in an barn from the train- looked like an old lorry". She also points out (and correctly identifies) old Land Rovers and shouts to me when there's a steam engine on TV. Oh, and suggested going for a ride on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway too :-D She keeps nagging me to get another Landy and is dead keen on coming to the GDSF this year. I'm lucky, cant be many 20 year old lasses that daft...
  13. Student house. Normality stops at the front door. For a long time we had a motorbike engine acting as a shoe tree. Even so, I think my housemates would comment if I bought a machine gun home.
  14. Did a while ago but I'm not really sure what it's going to achieve. I don't really see what business it is of the Government- surely the owners/ administrators can sell it to whoever they like? Don't get me wrong, I'd love it to be saved, but I suspect it's just a question of money and there's not really much the man on the street can do about that.
  15. Pass! I'd heard rumour too, but don't know if there is anything in it- our contact who got us the storage there in the first place heard it through the rumour mill too.
  16. I have no idea to be honest, I've never been there myself. The vehicles in question are all privately owned and just stored on site, I know there are quite a few Land Rovers but I'm not aware of any interesting MV's "at risk".
  17. We've managed to find somewhere now, thanks for the suggestions and advice folks. Just in time, as apparently all the project vehicles parked up Lyneham have had notices posted on them saying that if they are still there in two weeks then they will be scrapped...
  18. I wonder what happened to the Plymouth pair, kept at Laira Bridge for years as mentioned in one of the above links. No- one seems to know, so I suspect they were cut up- but it'd be nice to think they are still hidden away around here somewhere. Laira Bridge is a few minutes walk from my student house.
  19. That green 'un is a bizzare looking beastie- anyone know what it was used for with that back body?
  20. Actually it's because it's closing that she has to move- the big tidy- up prior to the site closing has started! If all else fails we'll give milbiz a try, thanks for the heads- up loggydriver.
  21. It really is. As you probably gathered I stumbled across it by accident and, had it not been there, would never have realised the significance of the beach we'd ended up by- cause to stop and think, certainly. Would be a real shame if it was moved because of local strength of feeling- some things are more important that what a few stuck- up NIMBYs think.
  22. Was still there when I broke down in the car park next to it a few years ago!
  23. Makes sense to me- People were buying a vehicle with a nice plate, selling the plate and getting a new age related one for the nominal fee for a re- reg, if that was a nice one they were selling that too. Can't blame the DVLA for not wanting to give away free money. I think the whole dateless plates on later cars/ personalised plate thing is silly anyway, but this is liable to turn into an off topic rant so I'll be quiet now... I do know of a 101 with the reg UZI101 which I thought was quite cool though.
  24. Even if it's one of the "flagships" and an exception rather than the rule, it's still nice to see a working timber tractor so nicely turned out. Thanks for posting the piccies.
