  1. I thought the "Bellewagen" referred to the K2 ambulances supplied after/during the war. I had no idea that the fire tenders were also called that.
  2. The only one that really differed was the FV601D supplied to the German border police (Bundesgrenzschutz). Apart from being painted in that 'orrible "Tannengruen", it had the coaxial MG deleted and German smoke dischargers fitted (somewhat bigger and longer and in groups of 4). I don't think that they were kept up to date to the same standard as the UK vehicles, at least that's what my mate from the BGS says!
  3. Apart from the standard half-tracks, the Germans had quite a few so-called Maulier (Mule) conversions, involving standard trucks and, usually, old tank chassis (ie PzKw 1). They also played with other track units. This could have been a local conversion job , using what was to hand.
  4. Didn't see the complete thing, as my broadband was playing up again! The Russian text probably means that it was intended for Russian (Soviet) TV - the usual socialist brotherhood crud.
  5. I suppose that even towing a 25pdr with an original Quad and a limber would be illegal nowadays - or what are the regs for towing two trailers?
  6. Probably something like MERRY CHRISTMAS, we were full of stunts like that
  7. No, that is an ex-FAA Dragonfly (Sikorsky S.51)
  8. There is a Sycamore in the RAF Museum Cosford - although in civilian markings (BEA I think)
  9. Here's another one I took of the Ferret in 2003.
  10. FV651 (A) and (B) depending on who did the equipment -Pyrene or Foamite. More commonly referred to as a Mk6.
  11. That Ferret pic looks suspiciously like mine, taken in 2003. Here are some of the Cent in Eastbourne, also in 2003.
  12. I think that you'll find that Devonshire was probably a troop ship, and that number was his manifest number. The Signals on Cyprus were 9 Signal Regt (made up from 2 independant squadrons) and 644 Signal Troop (UNFICYP)
  13. 13 was a field (light in some cases) regiment in a brigade. 18 Field Regt RA had a 66 (1 Division) whilst in Munsterlager (1963-66) and a 13 when it became a Light Regt with 48 (Gurkha Infrantry) Brigade in Hong Kong.
  14. They did it with Minis, so I suppose that it could work. You would probably have to contact a specilaist to see what problems (engineering AND bureaucracy !) that you could encounter.
  15. I married one too, of good proddie stock. Still together after 36 years! I allways say that it was love after the third brick! That usually occurs ten seconds before she smashes me over the head with the next convenient blunt instrument.
  16. ALL the seats in Crab Air passenger transports (except Boss Lady Flight) had backward-facing seats. Again this is a safety thing, although it would not sell well in civvy street. I have known CSMs who could reduce one to a midget (sorry - vertically-challenged person), without using one single swear word. I wonder if they go on a course to be able to do that ?
  17. Most of these barracks were purpose built for the military, and are very difficult to convert to other uses. These days it is far cheaper to pull something down and build new, rather than trying to convert. As for transport, I remember going on Flying Falcon from 3 Div (Bulford) in combats, travelling in coaches and flying in Britannias from Brize to Gutersloh. When we were deployed on Op Exit in Malta (1972) it was in civvies, in the back of an MK and flying in a Herc from Lynham.
  18. The M4A4 was a lend-lease version. The M50 is actually an Israeli upgrade from the early 1960s. It was originally fitted with a Continental R975 petrol power plant, later versions had a Cummins V8 460 bhp diesel. It had a Firefly turret and a French main gun, which was a development of the German 75mm KwK42 L/70 originally fitted to Panther tanks. About 300 units were built.
  19. The unit flash looks like a Signals outfit. White over blue with red numerals. The number suggests a Corps Signals Regiment. If it was involved in the battle for Westkappelle (translates into Western Chapel), it was probably XXX Corps under Horrocks.
  20. http://baor-locations.co.uk/menden.aspx http://picasaweb.google.com/historicsteve/MENDENNorthumberlandBarracks2009# Incidentally, Taunton Barracks, Celle (where 94 Locating and afterwards 14 Sigs were based) is now the Town Hall (Rathaus) for Celle. It started life as a German infantry barracks (Heide Kaserne) As for the WSPs, you only had to ask Soxmis - they knew where they all were!
  21. Not as far as I know. We only ever carried one SMG magazine on exercise and in NI. It was also awkward to stow in the pouch too.
