  1. Sorry Ian only just seen your post, yes it is an easy job just follow the GS manual. Bearings are greased and the seal is standard size nothing unusual. Make sure you have it on some decent axle stands; if you are working on your own you might find a pallet truck handy in removing the wheel. Let us know how you get on with some pictures please.
  2. Let’s face it; it’s not the BHP that drives us along it the torque the engine is producing, more importantly the torque curve of the engine. The 220 eagle has a nice smooth curve, compared with some of the turbocharged units, it won’t light any fires and you may be down a couple of cogs up hill. But it’s ok for a relaxing drive to a show. Not much use if you want to sit on the speed limiter all the way.
  3. Stal108 was talking about the 220 Rolls Eagle fitted to the Foden LMLC, as in the picture posed by Barry, and power queried by paul Mike was talking about the C6 Rolls range – don’t know why
  4. Totally agree apart from scrapping the Dyson, but know just how you feel. One point you raise is sprit and letter of the law, from personal experience I have always found the Police, VOSA and the Highways Authority always very helpful and a pleasure to deal with when ever I have taken something unusual out, even when there have been problems and we have had some very interesting ones over the years. Perhaps we have just been lucky.
  5. If you say so Mike, not how I would define it. It’s a clear as day in the STGO regulations, but that’s only my interpretation. Your entitled to your own opinion same as any one else.
  6. He thinks he’s Virgil Tracy now with Thunderbirds 2. All his toys lined up on pallets, just got to decide which one to take to the show :-D
  7. There is also nothing mentioned in Part 2 (Construction) that states a Loco cannot carry a load.
  8. Your quoting from the C&U regulations, the definition in the STGO regulations is much simpler as described in my post. To run STGO you have to comply with the STGO regulations for a locomotive not the C&U regulations for a locomotive. If the design train weight of the Constructor allows it to draw a trailer greater in weight than is allowed in the C&U regulations, then by its design it complies with the definition of a locomotive in the STGO i.e. being a vehicle designed of transporting a load that cannot be transported by conventional means. What width is the Antar
  9. So long as the locomotive is designed to pull a trailer that has been designed and constructed to transport AIL’s it can be run under STGO, what is the design train weight of the Constructor?

    Scrap

A lot of vehicles are worth more over the bridge at the moment, take an AEC Militant recovery £5,500 across the bridge, you wouldnt get that for a rough one at the moment. Lest with the scrap price high it gives you a bargaining point when people try to negotiate the price down If you do scrap it, it does make the ones that are left worth more, just like the universal carriers, lots of those were scrapped because they were worth more over the bridge. Don’t scrap it though it would be a shame, easy to say when you want the money. PX it in for a Diamond T
  11. Thanks Clive found the number and it’s a Scammell number not Leyland and doesn’t match the Leyland Vin plate in the cab. I suspect it has had a front ender at some point as the front body work is Leyland including the twin air filters, single radiator etc. It’s also got the Cummins 290 with a ZF box. However it’s the 30 ton Scammell bogie on the back, Scammell steering, the brakes are also piped up Scammell and the chassis number is Scammell so it looks like it is an S24. Good news really because the chassis is a bit straighter that the other one. Thanks again for your help PM sent
  12. One of the projects in at the moment is a Leyland Landtrain that we were going to break for parts for the S24, but to be honest it a bit good to break. Problem is it appears to be more Scammell than Leyland; in fact it appears to be a Scammell with a Leyland cab on. Question is, does anybody know where and if the VIN number is stamped into the chassis to see if it ties up with the Leyland Vin plate in the cab? Had a quick look and its not in an obvious place.
  13. Like running STGO vehicles taxed as Historic then. :-D
  14. Keep the tyres matched on either side and more importantly keep the tyres inflated at the correct pressure. Get one that is already registered to save hassle. Bouncing up and down kerbs etc. does nothing for wind up. Most people encounter transmission problems due to lack of maintenance especially fluid levels, get the manuals and carry out a full service before you take one anywhere, but beware the damage may have already been done by previous owners not carrying out the correct maintenance. There are not many un-abused ones out there now. One unusual quirk on the Stolly is the transfer gearbox dip stick, its marked wrong and if used for reference the centre bevel boxes are starved of oil. The best way to be sure of the correct oil level in the centre bevel boxes is to remove the cover plates and fill them up directly. Then fill the transfer box up to the same level, you can then remark the dipstick to the correct level, usually about an inch higher than originally indicated. Stolly’s are great fun but do take a lot of maintenance and if you get a bad one can be a real headache. I’ve had mine since 94 and only had transmission problems after doing daft things off road with it. I have driven thousands of road miles over the years and never had a problem with transmission windup, but I might just be lucky. I personally think you can drive a Stalwart on the road legally, others on the forum will disagree and it has been debated to death elsewhere.
  15. I’m up to 22 toys at present and it really must be down sized. It’s all down to the resource you have available, time, money, shed space, etc. One toy and 100% can be allocated to it, two and its 50/50%. With 22 toys that’s 4.5% each; probably not even enough to service them correctly. I know the above doesn’t quite work out, for example my Militant which is show ready doesn’t take up as much resource as my S24 that’s next in the workshop for restoration, but that means others are getting far less than 4.5%. Another potential problem is too much of a good thing; you just don’t get the same buzz. I think I enjoyed MV’s far more with just one vehicle, about one show per month in the show season and a bit of maintenance / improvements in between. It’s very easy to eat sleep and breathe MV’s or any other hobby, it’s not good for you. It’s like a disease, it creeps up on you without you noticing and before you know it, you have lost the enjoyment of your hobby. I got to that stage last year and couldn’t even face getting ready for a show, so I bought an old GPZ900 and had a bit of a welcome diversion, amongst other things, but we won't go there. I know my collection has to be reduced and I know I will enjoy my hobby more if I do, problem is choosing which ones go and realising you can’t buy all the bargains. Which is why I am posting on an internet form at quarter to two in the morning and drove 1,100 miles yesterday to John O’Groats to finalise the deal on a 70 Ton Crane Fruehauf Semi-trailer to go behind the S24? As I said, it’s a disease. :nut:
  16. So post April 84 trucks have to be fitted with side rails and under run protection, apart from those exempt as previously stated. Am I right in presuming that you can fit side rails and under run protection to trucks pre April 84 if you wish?
  17. Ok lets be sensible here, but could someone explain the purpose of side protection and under run protection and how it affects vehicle safety? Mods – if you feel it correct you can move this post to a new thread.
  18. Just to add to what Mike said, you also must be aged 21 or over and held a Full B licence for at least two years
  19. Yes Unladen Off topic a bit but wouldnt the laden weight of a loco be with balast which, could be classed as vehicle equipment.
