I drove my mates home 100 miles when he bought it and never heard the rumble but i wasn't paying for the fuel so it was never on over run:cool2: The first time we heard it was running down a slight hill on the way to the pub, I seemed to occur between drive and over run in that slack bit when you not driving or slowing. We thought we had a major problem. we put it down to the rear propshaft running at a steep angle:blush: My landy did exactly the same thing when i lifted the ride height but i sorted that by putting wedges between the spring and the axle to point the diff back down and get the flanges parallel and that sorted it. It's a very odd grumble:shocked:
  2. they also cut through the hydraulic pipes on the dipper arm to get it on the lorry:nut: Like nobody had a spanner:-(
  3. sometimes even a spade can't help you though. found this vid on you tube a while ago. can't imagine the suction involved but he let it sit with some weight on for a while:wow:Something went wrong...also shows our friends the round sling in use:D
  4. Never underestimate the power of a spade!!!:thumbsup: half an hour with a spade often helps in a big way. moving earth and clearing chassis crossmembers is always my first point of attack.

My mate tells me they are now pulling the front axles off those huge recovery trucks that replaced the Fodens ( I forget what they are called...You konw the new ones they've been given). can't remember if they are ripping them off or leaving them behind in the sand:rofl: His two lads have to put up with them and reckon they are to big, heavy, coverd in electric safety and the front axles arn't very well fastened on.
  6. handbrake off in neutral and thats it. Seems to just sit there quite happy in its little dents in the grass.

Yes as said before remove the locking wire from the small set screws and slack them back then tighten the huge nut with said spanner and sledge hammer and retighten the small bolts back up and rewire. the small bolts retaind the bearing. The large nut should have a line or center punch mark scribed on the face of the nut and shaft this is how tight you need to get the nut. there may be more than one mark from previous rebuilds. I made my spanner from some thick plate and the rear arm off a fordson major tractor. It has to be solid and well made> jumping on a socket and long bar won't help you

Haven't been to this one for a couple of years but it was ony a small do last time i went, say about 6 or 8 steamers some good working displays ect. might be much better now though. sure many years ago it was much nearer corwen as i remember seeing the steam train passing and it was quite a large vintage show then i went a few years later and it had moved near drewids as was much smaller. let us know how it is as i can't get there this year:-)
  9. Spotted today at Bill Hesleton's recovery yard.....another ex army Foden Recovery truck with smashed up cab. all running and working with a new cab sat on a pallet ready to fit. This will be replacing the AEC militant with the Leyland cab. Whats better than a foden?.....Two Fodens:D
  10. I'm 33 and have a scammell explorer and have gone through 1 relationship already cos of it. number two is going well:D
  11. the Foden is a good truck too so long as you can get climb into the cab without it overturning on to you:)

I did pretty much the same thing about 6 years ago but it was a mobile crane i stuffed into a ditch on a single track road.:blush: IT was recoverd by a scammell crusader which was set up in front of the crane. The winch rope then went out at about 30 degrees to a buldozer which we buried in the field in line with the side of the crane. Web strops were put round the jib and the whole thing was pulled upright with the winch. The crane was fired up and with the aid of the rear steer and four wheel drive it drove out as the winch kept the pull on. I have some pics of it somewhere but none of the recovery as i was the only one who could fit through the window to get in the crane to drive it:-)
  14. I bought my scammell without seeing it but the chap was really nice and said he would rather i came to take a look at it. I new it would be worse than the pictures and it was. he was in the prosess of taking the buisnes back off the people he let run the company and was not impressed with the state of the toys, infact they had run them into the ground. He bought the scammell for people tp off road but knowone could change gear in it so he kept it for himself.and just used it on odd ocasions. Got as far as restoring one wheel and hub and decided to flog it.
  15. He's a nice bloke when you get chatting to him, think the cab was all pine paneled too, very cosy me thinks. will Daisy be there next year?
  16. Was the heavy horses Explorer "sir winston" still running with no rear propshaft or is it sorted now. And its good to see Julian has started to reskin the cab on jumbo. I must make the effort and get down next year:blush:
  17. I have never seen that type of recovery set up in use and wonderd just how it could be deployed. It's all normally stowed away on a pristine lorry an your left wondering how it all comes into play. So thanks for explaning that especialy the fact that the winch cables can be passed under the dt. It would make a really good static display for a DT owner to set up if there was enough space. I had the landy out today for some fun with the guys from the club and was winching for pleasure. And with all this information i've been taking in we had things rigged and sorted much qiucker and with less load on the gear. using the terrain to our advantage rather than fighting against it. :thumbsup:
  18. It's not just ramblings it's usefull information and i for one enjoy logging on to read this thread and have learned a few good tips. I would like to see a few more pictures of recovery jobs with a little bit of a discription if possible. Super stuff:tup::
  19. I'll have a look when i have a couple of hours. I can make a note of how it is now and look at adjusting the slack out of it. my brake pedal has at least 6" travel with the air built up.
  20. Hi chaps :-) Took the scammell for another test run today after sorting all the hub seals ect and think the brakes could be just a tad better. I have adjusted the rear shoes as it says in the book and there is plenty of meat left on the shoes themselves. The truck pulls up nice an straight however i can bottom the brake pedel out with my size 12. I feel here lies the problem. The lower arms on the vertical gear shafts on the walking beams are touching the gear case in the little resess for them is this correct? How much slack shoud be in the overcomplicated rear brake cables the long ones on mine can be moved up and down about 6". Are the cables supposed to be tight and pulling the vertical spindel arms slightly? If this was the case i would have thought adjusting one wheel station would tighten all the other rear brakes through the compensator linkages. Is slack required in the linkages to allow the walking beams to move without pulling the brakes on. I am pretty sure the vertical spindels are supposed it be touching the back of the beams to allow the brakes to be adjusted its just the slack in the cables that is the problem. The book says nothiing about setting it all up and most of the adjustable links have the same thread each end :nut: just another point when pulling the main rod from the servo i can here air moving in the valves is this normal too? Sorry for all the questions but if anyone has set one up from scratch a step by step guide would be very helpfull:undecided: Thanks
  21. Also they can be used to reduce the speed of the pull eg. when pulling a casualty back on to it's wheels when you need more controll. Very usefull if you have a stupidly fast mechanical winch like the one on the explorer. It will also halve the load on the winch brake if you have to pay out the winch under load (a near impossible thing to do with a scammell vertical winch without shock loading) We'll be on to Strops and rigging soon:D........Mmmmmmm....endless round slings....:bow:The greatest invention ever:-)
