  1. £65 Which is £15 more than I have ever spent on a book before... and that was for the entire WW2 vintage bound volumes of 'the war illustrated'. I was offered them by an old lady whos husband had collected them during the war and was clearing out his study, oooohhh must be 12 years ago now. PS. I got my wife to buy it.... I don't get to read it until Christmas :-)
  2. Guys, I have read many conflicting reports concerning the colour of British vehicles in North West Europe post D-Day. I presume (it would be logical) that all US manufactured vehicles arrived at the UK docks painted Olive Drab. Questions: Were they repainted in the British colour (khaki Drap?) before issue to units? Were they repainted in the British colour upon arrival in the units? Were they repainted ONLY when major work had to be done on them? Were they always left in Olive Drab? Vehicles with extensive UK modifications, i.e. Fireflys & Crabs would be painted the standard British colour before they left the factory doing the conversion....right? I'm sure the answer as always is a mix. I imagine Adrian would be the best to give first hand info as he took his M4A4 back to bare metal, thus saw each layer of original paint. Primer - OD - KD??
  3. By Richard Hunnicutt Does anyone know if / when there will be a reprint of this book? I'd love to get a copy in any condition, but they are currently starting at £200:??? on amazon, I have found one in the US for £90, but it is still a huge amount for a modern(ish) book. I'll bet all those model makers have been after it and driving up the price :-)
  4. FYI: Dogs got me up early on Sunday and while I was waiting for them to come back in I poped on the TV. Tank Overhaul S2 was on 'Yesterday' they were covering the Cent restoration at Duxford. This weekend they are showing an Elephant and BMP restoration starting at 6am.
  5. A really well thought out site, easy to navigate and to the point (just like web sites use to be in the good old days of the mid 90s). I learnt something new as well so that can't be bad.
  6. I love keeping up to date with this thread, jolly interesting. Idea: My cousin runs a company who chemically clean ferrous parts in the West Midlands. Since I've had access to that I have never sand or shot blast anything again! I send down a stripped engine (all the parts) and it comes back on a pallet like the day it left the machine shop. They remove paint and hydrocarbons in a strong alkaline tank then corrosion in a heated acidic tank, doesn't affect machined surfaces to any great extent. He has steered the company towards dipping entire chassis and bodies, but it is just as useful on mechanical parts. http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk
  7. My Dad fitted a sequential gas injection system on his 1999 4.0 Range Rover in 2006, with a Gen 2 Rangie you can get a 90L tank in the spare wheel well, you wouldn't know it has been converted. He loves it. A Disco I or II is a different beast, you need sequential injection if you have a Disco II or III (Expensive). Then the biggest problem is the lack of space for the new tank. IMHO you don't want an LPG tank cluttering up the boot, I think they can be fitted in place of the fuel tank on IIs and IIIs but again expensive. Get a TD5/6 and be done with it.
  8. John, It is probably common knowledge, but what is the story behind your Valentine? I had a good look around it at W&P, talk about a rare vehicle, does the screen operate as intended or is it 'for show'. Sadly I wasn't lucky enough to hear her running. Thanks
  9. What happened to all the 6 pdrs? With APDS they were damn good in WW2, how long did they stay in reserve after the war? Who did we sell them all to.... if they haven't scrapped them they may still be in reserve. Did we lend-lease any to Russia in WW2? If we did then they may well be still in reserve.
  10. Visited on Saturday. Lucky with the weather! A great day, so much to see, I will give it a miss next year though and go the Tankfest AND Armour & Embarcation. To the people with armour.... wouldn't it be more intresting to navigate through some fields and a wood rather than drive around a little circuit? I was surprised not to see more Universal Carriers..... I thought the T34's had well looked after V12s, we were at the exit to the arena throughout the main displays and you could hardly hear the thing as it pulled up in the que, the T54 and T72 were another matter, they sounded like they were about to throw in the towel at any time:-D
  11. Any idea of the program for Saturday? I am setting off at 8am, so should be down by 10. Will I be missing any of the 'events'?
  12. Saturday. It is all planned. Hope to see some of you there:)
  13. It has been quite long enough now...... does anyone have photos to post of any of the Brazilian M3s undergoing restoration?
  14. what... touching distance or in the county?:-D
  15. It would be a great idea, I recall Adrian and Jim said they were going, so that's two M4A4s.... I'm sure we can rustle up a Grizzly and if we could get an M4A2 we would have the British engine types.
  16. What would be the likelyhood of getting an example of every British wartime Sherman type in one place, part of one show..... I'd like to see all the types present in the battles of Normandy i.e. no 76mm or HVSS versions: M4 - 75mm M4A1 - 75mm M4A2 - 75mm M4A4 - 75mm M4 or M4A4 Firefly. If we tried to get Europes largest gathering of running wartime spec Shermans since the 1950s it could be quite news worthy.
  17. A worthy job! Question: Are you keeping the M4 in it's post war guise or are you returning it to 'factory' condition? Bit of a tricky decision as I suppose the post war mods are just as 'historically significant' as it's original condition. If pressed I'd say WW2 condition will prevail PS. anymore info on that european spares source? PSS. If you haven't already get a DSLR and take a stupid amount of photos, you will regret it in the future if you don't:cry:
  18. The Tank Museum JagdTiger on test in 1945....
  19. I'd dismissed the diesel option as I didn't see much smoke to speak of :-D
  20. Great movie.....but.... That M4A1 appears to have a V8, the exhaust is in the wrong place.... has the Radial been replaced with a Ford GAA V8 ??
  21. There is a video on Youtube of a restored JagdPzIV driving in a field accompanied by some LH people, however there is no details of when and where. Also: We should adjust the list to differentiate between StuG IIIs and StuG IVs, there is a StuG IV shown on page 9 of the 1st eddition of 'Pathfinder' undergoing restoration to running condition. See photo: http://www.sturmgeschutziv.pl/
  22. Is it me or did anyone else think the comparison between the Tiger I and Sherman M4A2 HVVS (76) was a little Silly? A comparison between a Tiger I and a regular M4A2 would have had much more validity.... By the time the M4A2 or M4A3 HVVS (76) came along most of the Tiger Is on the Western Front were either knocked out or abandoned to the West of the Sein. Besides a Sherman with wide tracks, long barrel and muzzle break looks more than a match for a Tiger I to the general public:-D
  23. Have a look at the following link to this 2003 site: http://www.alanhamby.com/factory1.shtml Although this is the factory pages, the entire site is great with lots of aspects that are not regularly in print. The manufacturing photos are intresting as normally only 'in service' shots are circulated. Wartime Tank manufacture could make a nice book, hmmm..... 'Building Blitzkrieg' has a nice ring to it.
  24. Reviewing an old post... Does anyone know who brought the JadgPzIV (shown below during recovery) from Bulgaira last year? Do hope it came to the UK.
