  1. Kevin, Nice vehicles, I must ask about the top one: Where did you locate a carrier in such good condition? Most of the stuff I've seen over the last few years has been rather hacked about as far as the super structure is concerned. Can I presume from the green paint that it has been restored before and then neglected (not by you)? People will probably point you in the direction MLF but I think the people knocking around HMVF are a good bunch  just remember to keep your biscuits under lock and key while at the club house.
  2. They were! I'd like to think that some interested party will be researching and publishing photos from the Russian and Ukranian archives within the next 10 years. If you've ever read Anthony Beavors works you'll know he spent years in the Moscow archives, both national and ex-KGB with fantastic payback. PS. That link was a great site, took me back to the early days of the net :-)
  3. I found a more up to date reference from 2010: http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?136939#119668 It appears the Poseidon was scrapped in China, but they claim that there were no remains to be discovered, but ALSO that there records are a little 'lacking' from those years. PS. Rememeber the U-boat (U-534) that was raised in the north sea back in the early 90s, it was all over the BBC? It was on display largely intact in Liverpool, however the museum went under and the U-boat was sold.... to move it they chopped it into three! Apparently it is now displayed in its three sections in Liverpool. I suppose it is better to do that than leave it to rot, but all the same....cutting it up, it doesn't sit right. PPS. The british government attitude to wartime preservation used to stink! Just look down the East coast of the US, they have got a vast amount of preserved ships and submarines.... and us.... one 'wartime' sub in portsmouth, a Cruiser (Belfast) and possibly a destroyer. I've always hoped that the Government would buy or trade back HMS Hermes from the Indians when she gets decommissioned and dock her in the Thames. Perfect ship: Wartime design, Cold War service, sent to the Falklands in 82, all bases covered.
  4. I was tracking down all the preserved WW2 Submarines around the world (we do have a poor show :-( ), I came across a reference to HMS Poseidon a British sub that was sunk in an accident near China in 1931. A news report said that new evidence leaked in 2009 from China admits that the Poseidon was raised from 40m of water in 1971 as an exercise for the Chinese Navy but the Chinese Government will not elaborate on what they did with the remains of the sailors or the remains of Poseidon..... intersting that one. Any one with an update?
  5. Thanks, I'm having a look now... As an aside, I am amazed at the size of the houses around Houston, for the value of my House in the UK I could get a 4 bed with 1/2 acre and a garage big enough to fit a Diamond T. Our conversations go like this... Jenni: 'that's a wonderful kitchen, look at all that storage space' Me: 'Yes Nice, but have you seen the garage? It's not quite what I'm after' Jenni: 'Ok, lets look at ones with bigger garages then' = my wife is the best!
  6. Gold plated with knobs on I understand, thanks for prompting me at ask the question! Where do you look around for WW2 vehicles in the US? I've found a couple of Jeeps available in Tx, but not much else, is there a single resource that people use? Milweb is mainly European sales by the look of it....
  7. Thanks everyone, My wife is checking things out at the moment as I have just arrived back in Burma on this bast#rd offshore platform again. Apparently she likes an area called Cypress.
  8. Amazing how things take unexpected turns! My company is in the process of offering me a package to move to Houston, Texas..... never expected that. I know most of us are from the UK but does anyone come from the US? There is so much new information to gather that on the the face of it, it appears overwelming. Key points: How does local housing tax work, is it based on the house value? Where can I get an idea of the $ cost per anum? Can I own a tracked vehicle :-) My wife doesn't consider this an important point:-D Any info on nice areas to live? I've worked in Houston a few times, but only in the industrial area and never visted down town or the Suburbs. PMs are fine.
  9. Sorry:embarrassed: Delete this thread guys...
  10. I just spotted a tank museum video showing the relocation of their Henschel KingTiger (do they own it or is it on loan... wasn't it on a training base before?). I know the subject has been discussed before and I think people said it had no engine or gearbox... if we are honest that isn't really a show stopper. I'm sure there is a monument in Europe which could donate the trans and gearbox, as for the engine, they are never impossible. It isn't quite as 'historic' as 131 so they needn't do a full detailed restoration.... jut make it move under it's own power. If the museum is being run more along the lines of a business now, I think a running KingTiger has a business case.
  11. I remember in the early 90's when an English chap was scouring the former USSR for WW2 German aircraft wrecks, the Airplane magazine showed many photos of the recovered machines. This old camcorder film is top notch.... how much do we all wish we were to stumble upon this when taking the dog for a walk:-D Something went wrong...
  12. Never mind the German ranges..... Former USSR ranges (did they follow the 'range' idea?) must have had a hell of a lot of WW2 German AFVs shot up on them, considering how many 1,000s were captured. Has anyone ever done a search?
  13. A good video, I hadn't seen most of that footage. Worth a note that most if not all of that was 'colourised' black and white footage. One of the early shots was (I think) a panzerfaust or panzershrek hit, I've not seen one before. 53 Secs
  14. That also holds true for many of the fabricated tanks, so long as you have the cast parts, the rest it a matter of skillfull fabrication.
  15. That was the first time I visted, I was about 12 :-) As such I can't be held accountable for my actions.... can I? Just over the road was a small compound with a number of AFVs in rather bad shape, after climbing all over the tatty M4A1 76 that was next to the car park I ventured over to the compound and came back with little bit of Churchill. It was part of one of the track guard ribs, rather corroded and with a little yellow paint. My memory isn't too good on what exactly is was, but I'm sure it was yellow and had a 'cab' sitting on top of it. Any idea what kind of post-war mod it could have been? That little bit was cleaned, painted olive green from my humbrol paints and sat in my bedroom for years :-) Infact I think it moved house with me, could be a good oman!
  16. I had heard of Pounds yard years ago, but I never knew the full story of why they had so many WW2 tanks, where they were brought from and when, I've always presumed it was a scrap yard who couldn't be bothered to spend the gas cutting them up and then forgot about them. I was just looking through the Churchill register and it dawned on me how many of the survivours came from one place!
  17. Don't need to say anything, pictures speak louder than words. Are we likely to see any info of the twin-diesel engine being rebuilt, or is it going in 'as is'? I think I noticed it in the background and I'd love to know more about them and how they interface with the single output shaft. I've not read a single word about one so I like to fill the knowledge gap.
  18. That's nothing. I've got the full set in the workshop, only 35x smaller:-D
  19. While looking at the news I spotted this: http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/25012010/36/sunken-bugatti-nets-pound-228-000-0.html The writing is on the wall already..... is the price of WW2 armour following the trend set by pre-war sports / racing cars?
  20. That's the kind of info I was after John, thanks a lot. Perhaps I should become a friend again, it has been over ten years now - what is the subscription up to?
  21. Up on the next Witham tender is a (number of actually) Wolf described thus: 'Landrover 110 Wolf with parts removed to include all major assemblies' What does that mean? Do they mean: Landrover 110 Wolf, includes all major assemblies but with some parts removed or Landrover 110 Wolf with all major assemblies removed Has anyone any experiance with demobbed 110 Wolves, in terms of what state they are usually in?
  22. You have got to put it in context, I don't think the british film industry has made a Horror film in that vein for years. Any post 2000 US ones are full of lazy direction and editing with young green actors.. For me Outpost had great back track, sound effects, iconic visuals, authentic set design and some half decent acting. But hey, that is just my opinion.
  23. This is always a good place to start when seeing what's going on in Russia, a friend from work who has a Russian wife put me on to it a couple of years ago, I have a look now and again for anything interesting. http://englishrussia.com/?p=5241 Although the photo looks washed out and old, the clothing looks current so this must have been within the last few years.
  24. The sequel is out towards the end of this year 'Outpost II: Black Sun', due to the success of the first film I understand that they have a much larger budget for this one.
  25. Hanno, You must have spent a lot of time in the UK on and off over the years.... your second home :-)
