  1. Always use a new tab washer! On the way to W&PR last year the Shorland snapped a half shaft. It turned out that part of the re-used tab had failed & the hub was becoming progressively loosened. It is tempting to think that re-using the tab will get you out of an emergency, but it is so easy to forget to replace it.
  2. Well done Rich you are really getting on with it. For future reference what was the silencer you used? Is it the same length? I have just fitted my last NOS silencer so it should see me out. But just in case worth knowing of options. Electronic well worthwhile before that backfires split two silencers on the Hornet. For that I used a silencer from a Bedford Midivan but even those became a rarity. But that was a different system to the Pig being mounted under the engine protected with an expanded belly plate.
  3. ....unless they trip over the barrier :-(
  4. An interesting link about Portuguese GNR Shorlands http://www.shorlandsite.com/WhatsNew.htm
  5. Good stuff Richard. Fletch was clearly impressed with the nurse who had been roped in for extra duties, but were there any 1 Ton Commers?
  6. There is a slide-on & a slide-off version. But be careful with modern versions I have had a lot of trouble with them not making a good seal, I found the only reliable connectors were old military ones. I also got caught out buying the modern fittings themselves & now only use genuine military ones. If you do have leakage when you are greasing (or oiling) a good tip is to put a piece of say a cloth hanky over the connector. That ensures a tighter fit yet the force of the lubricant pushes the fibres apart allowing lubrication without leakage.
  7. In an old cross-referencing catalogue 47628/84 corresponds to Ford 530E75508. No other manufacturers gave an equivalent, so it's just for a Ford of some sort.
  8. That's an interesting bit of research & untangling, thank you for sharing it. I suspect the A/78/CLO format may have been introduced after the Defence (Transfer of Functions) Act 1964 when "A" signified Army. I notice after that time publications that formerly used a WO Registry File number assumed an "A" prefix as well. Prior to this what was the typical contract prefix? I think "GS" is General Stores as I notice the Army Cataloguing Authority combined responsibilities for Clothing & General Stores at Didcot, so one can see the CLO/GS is closely related.
  9. Roger is too modest to say but the example WFX417, which several of us posted, is Roger's Humber & has rightly won many prizes not least the Best Postwar Vehicle at the last War & Peace.
  10. I have to ask if amongst your cards there are any in the Humber 1-Ton FV1600 series please?
  11. Gareth I doubt that a User Handbook exists. It is not listed in my 1974 catalogue & besides it wouldn't provide the detail you need. In theory if there was a Technical Handbook - Technical Description, it would have appeared as EMER WHEELED VECHLES U 202. Looking in EMER WV A 001 that is the Detailed Index no such publication is listed. The only other hope is some clue in a Modification that touches on your problem. Looking in EMER WV U 207 Index there is nothing relevant nor is there a Miscellaneous Instruction in EMER WV U 209 that would help I'm afraid. It might be worth asking if someone else has had the same problem on http://www.series2club.co.uk/forum/forum/ and http://forum.emlra.org/
  12. David perhaps bicycle tube repair glue as I think that has a vulcanising effect if the patch is also rubber?
  13. In case you are wondering if the parts book would help I'm afraid I don't think it does. I know this is mounted the other way up but here are the relevant pages.
  14. No I don't think it is a later type Gareth. It is EMER WHEELED VEHICLES U 209 Misc Instr No.5 April 1966 for Trailer, 1/2 Ton, 2 Wh, Mk 1, All types (Post War Pattern) The actual draught eye is LV9/BTR FV11520 or FV11558 The next Misc Instr refers to Mk 2 & later Mk 1 fitted with LV9/BTR/FV183470 refers to fitting a slotted nut with a hole drilled in the shaft for a split pin.

G001 prefix is a NIMC (Naval Inventory Management Code) for "feed water & circulating systems".
  16. Gareth I don't have a trailer like yours & having difficulty trying to see how it would fit in with the info I have. But some Mk 1 trailers were modified by being reamed & split pins fitted then peened over so they may not be easy to spot.
  17. Nigel if you have the Pig UHB that's fine. A mistake that could be made is to look in the section that covers adjustments in Unit Repairs in EMER WHEELED VEHICLES N253 that describes it nicely. But it was written in 1954 which pre-dates the Pig so is just for CT/GS. Although it was amended in 1966 to include armoured variants, this was merely a preface page to show variants included but the text was not amended. However the text was amended for the Pig Mk 2 in EMER WV N253/2 so the settings for Dimension 3 are: Front (the same): 2in now quoted +/- 1/8in Rear: 2 1/4in +/- 1/8in The difficulty comes in rolling the vehicle forwards on a flat level surface & letting it come to rest without using the brakes. Making the adjustments then rolling it again & checking until correct! Incidentally EMER WV N253/1 does not seem to exist. But it would not cover Pig Mk 1, suffix /1 denoted Hornet.

Peter I just get this: "Invalid Attachment specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"
  19. Nigel are they both up-armoured? Or has one had some armour removed? There are 3 sets of settings for the lower suspension arms settings depending if unarmoured, armoured or uparmoured. Have you got a user handbook or the EMER that covers it? If not I'll post the settings diagram.
  20. Nigel nice to see the twins together. I don't know if its to do with local geography or in the photography, but are the torsion bars wound up tighter on TST?
  21. Ah before my time Richard, my list was only 1954
  22. Can't find a DJH4A but I see a DKH4A was used in Commer Q15 & Karrier Bantam Mk 1
