philm1
Firewall back in place and starting to fit out. Looking at the pictures it was August 2016 when it was removed. Out in August 2016 back in January 2019.
philm1
Wiring of the new instrument panel almost complete. Once finished focus will switch to getting the engine ready to install and try and start.
philm1
A bit slack on updating but we have installed the engine and had a brief test run. Everything went and sounded good. We used the Ferret as the slave battery. Next will be to finish off the gear box and coolant plumbing so we can run it longer and even try to move it under it's own power. Thanks to Todd who helped with the install and getting it started. received_393756131415242 (1).mp4
Andrew Rowe
Hi Phil, you will be using the "donut" type coupling for the engine to gearbox?. I think you need to change the input flange of the gearbox for the "3 -pronged" one, as the one that you have on is for the earlier driveshaft variant, it should only be a split pin and nut to undo and maybe a puller to remove and change out for the correct one....ready by Easter! Cheers Andrew.
philm1
Good spotting Andrew. I will recover the coupling off the other gearbox. Ready by Easter lol. I hear on good authority there's another Scorpion that will be at the Easter Rally unattended at nights...... Busy at work is slowing things down currently so aim will be Labour Weekend at yours. philm1
Work still progressing with more parts off the shelf and fitted. Each with it's own clean up and restoration as you go but progress is progress. As Andrew pointed out We needed to recover the donut type coupling off the old gearbox and fit it to the replacement. This was done and the drive shaft installed.
philm1
Air cleaner stripped back, repainted and re fitted.
philm1
Generator had been stripped and rebuilt some months ago but still needed a repaint plus the air intake sheild was US so a new one was made. At the same time of painting the dirvers firewall was repainted ready for fitting. A bit cooler outside so we used the workshop heater to help the paint dry.

philm1
Gosh a bit slack in posting seeing the last one was 22 June. I guess Winter hibernation kicked in? I haven't been completely idle though. Gearbox oil filter and hoses fitted. So in the front I really only need to re bleed the brakes and I can then re fit and plumb up the radiator. philm1
Also over Winter a Breech Block arrived in the mail. A bit more paper work required than usual to get permits following a terrorist attack here in NZ. Firearm ownership all that bit harder now. I have stripped it all down, cleaned, re assembled and fitted back in the Breech Ring. One difficulty I did have was removing the Firing Mechanism. Had I read the manual properly it all makes sence in hindsight. Breech Block must be in the Breech Ring. Set Lever to Safe. Fire the Striker Mechanism (this bit wasn't in the manual but it worked for me). Rotate the Striker Mechanism and remove.
philm1
Also I have been slowly cleaning up the turret internals with the plan that if the component was in reasonable condition to clean and refit. If not then a repaint. All back in now including new piping for the periscope washers. Just the machine gun mount to do. I don't have the turret ring so if someone has one lying about or any othe components you think I need please let me know. Washer bottle, traverse indicator dial, radio gear are also items on the need list.

DSmall
Hi Phil , Amazing project and what you guys have achieved is something to be proud of. Hey I wonder if possible you could let me know what flaming hoops are required to import a CVRT to NZ . ie customs and import tax etc. the hidden costs. Any pointers greatly received. I see a great option for me in aus to purchase a Spartan and get it here to nz but just wish to be aware of the hidden costs before committing to it fully . A big investment and would hate to buy and have to leave in aus due to some nz import issues. Thanks in advance . David
dgrev
David I did not know there were any in Oz. Diesel or petrol? Regards Doug
philm1
Machine gun mount now installed. Just need the actual MG to fill the hole or at least a mocked up barrel.
philm1
I have also stripped the drivers seat down, sand blasted everything, unseized the backrest ratchet, repainted and re assembled.
philm1
Then a little bit of a backwards step. The cooling fan should have been installed before the engine went back in which was a rookie mistake thinking it could go in after. Cunning plan to take the front pulley off only missed by an inch of fitting. Ah well lifted the bulk head and fitted. Very easy to do but 2-3hrs of wasted time.

Cornishbloke
Looks lovely as ever. Just a word of warning about the fan and fan belt. We tried to attend a Poppy Day event but broke down on the way there as the fan belt shredded. It turns out that the alignment between the engine, gearbox pulley and fan pulley is critical as if it is out the belt can creep and self destruct. When I refit the new one I'm going to use an incinometer to make sure it's spot on! Richard

When I first put the gearbox and fire wall in I mucked around getting it aligned top and bottom as they describe in the manuals but i will recheck again. The drive shaft also lined up with the engine mounting holes so hopefully all good there as well. We'll give it a good shake down before venturing too far. terryb
British army practice was to fit a second toothed belt in position but tied back out the way. Always thought it a bit odd until one day gunning down a very busy single track lane miles from home, the belt failed! lorry driver in the qeue behind lent me an adjustable, lift the lid, slack off the alternator belt and loosen the fan, slide on the spare belt-done that was a godsend, and saved a heck of a lot of grief! terry
