  5. Just came to me what the rollers are off if you blow up the picture they are the front fairlead rollers of some thing like the scammell recovery or a martian or something. Maybe an aborted attempt to somehow give it a side or forward winching ability
  6. When i got the book many years ago with that back view of the wrecker in i was in my mid teens and spent many hours dreaming about having such equipment. I analysed every picture in great detail so i knew what everything was and did. I worked out it was modified Garwood equipment and those little things were set in side lights or indicators. The picture was shown on here and by the miracle of computers i was able to enlarge the photos and prove i was wrong for 40+ yrs they are indeed rollers held in by a large diameter lock nut as to there use i am completly at a loss hang about for another 40 yrs i might have an answer
  7. Could also be they pinched the idea/ pieces of a Scammell to extend the boom.
  8. to be honest i thought it was the wrecking gear off a WLF down to rear roller winch etc just had a different boom and land anchor fitted and body work put round it

  10. Hi i have been search for photos to identify the crane fitted to someone who has asked about his fathers albion this crane is the only one that looks anything like the same construction
  11. Here is a picture i have never seen before same gear as the DT i think its a real bonny looking truck supplied to US Navy during and after WW11
  12. Rubbish the whole art of recovery is to do the least possible damage. Laying it over or righting. read what i put if the only thing touching the floor is the wheels what will get damaged. " winch the casualty over untill the crane catches it then lower down untill it looks to all intents and purposes it looks like its laid flat on the ground raise it back up again till you come to the point were the winch catches it and lower gently to the ground. Couple of things to watch out for but all easily overcome"
  13. [ Recovery of vehicles is not governed by hard and fast rules or standard procedures. You weigh up the situation, plan the recovery phase and then carry out the recovery. I'm sure there are a number of people who would do it another way - anyone have any ideas on the above. very true there is no right way to carry out any recovery the ones that are the best do no further damage but there are wrong ways
  14. Ok so unless you can get a donor casualty vehicle volunteer you are pretty much limited to what you can do. You all ready do from what i read a road train towing event how,s about involving the public a little more in this and do a bit of fund raising at the same time. Sell a few tickets at guess the weight its takes to move this impressive display. All you need to do is blagg a local test house lifting gear manufacturer to attend with a load shackle and after the run round get the lead vehicle to drop off and winch the train forward ???? Open a few eyes me think
  15. i think you have answered all questions you have raised in your reply. Nobody would be daft enough to volunteer a truck if they thought it would be damaged. hence that is why i suggested a ward le france. On the back of it is the superstructure that was designed to take all the loads that are fed into it when lifting slewing etc evenly safely back into the chassis. Instead of wraping straps around fragile bodywork one simply hang on to the superstructure high up a couple of tons pull would be more than enough to get it going towards the ground. once it got to the point of balance it would be arrested by the crane also fastened to the superstructure and lowered to the ground. if lowered till it looked like it was flatdown but no bodywork touching the floor the most load imposed would be about 5ton. this i would bet would be all lot lot less than the superstructure was designed to take in normal use.At no time in the exercise would the tyres skip as the would always have enough weight on them. although i would take the precaution of a couple ratchet straps on to stop the vehicle moving laterally with it having a transmission brake. i was not being being frivolous when i suggested it and would not expect anyone to have a go at anything i would not try my self, So yes if i were lucky enough to own a fantastic piece of kit like a WLF i would do it
  16. OK so nobodies got the balls to let there pride and joy to be laid on it side no damage hows about stood on its end promise no damage. As a aside to this post there is a guy who travels to the truck shows and organises recovery demonstrations can put in touch if anybody interested
  17. i did mention there are things to watch out for but all are easily over come. I was serious when i suggested it plus it took into account the observations i made regards size movement safety.

Quick observations have done many demos at training sessions shows etc. What grabs attention from spectators is movement they soon become bored. second its "size that matters" joe bloggs has no concept of weight only size. From reading comments there will be two WLF there why not roll one on to its side "No Damage of course" and stand it back up again three or 4 times in the centre of the arena while the others are going around the outside. it would only take an hour to practise getting distances right out of site of course. Once ready to go it could be set up in minutes. One parked at right angles to the other in line with the superstructure a couple of soft endless straps on it "the crane superstructure". using the winch on the recovering one to winch the casualty over untill the crane catches it then lower down untill it looks to all intents and purposes it looks like its laid flat on the ground raise it back up again till you come to the point were the winch catches it and lower gently to the ground. Couple of things to watch out for but all easily overcome. More important safe well within working loads
  20. Put this video on not saying its right or wrong. Dont include anything military but i think it shows many things you have to watch out for and to give the guys their due they seem to have covered all the pit falls and they are not using super modern gear
  21. from the reports it seems its fairly unique and well a one off hows about a campaign to salvage and restore it
  22. the one we had had winch and land anchor from new as did 2 others i saw later on
