  1. you got plug leads 0n right
  2. i am 100 per cent behind you on that one if its there and running whats the point in ripping it out and putting 3.5k of diesel conversion by the time u add in labour to end up saving £200 over a season maybe
  3. Like said any engine would be doable. Scania engine would be my choice though as they were fairly high reving i did a couple conversions to Big Ben trucks and kept same road speed. Turbos mounted mid way down not on top so no bonnet clearance problems. Only snag they are bad to find (Rough fourwheeler bald tyres rotton cab delivered to docks £4 to 5K so nobody seems to want to take engines out anymore) Thats the problem now with all the older engines if in a truck and start they are fetching good money for export.

My scorce tells me the Museum had a dornier gifted to them when it opened by Farnbourgh all though he isnt sure of its model no. It had been flown and evaluated by a british test pilot after its capture during the war. It was scrapped after it was damged accidently (fire maybe?) somehow while at the museum

Notice all the subtle softening up for the bad news after all the hype. Quote"Should the weather provide additional challenges to the actual integrity of the aircraft, the Museum is committed to salvaging the parts it can in order to treat, examine and exhibit this incredible part of aviation history" from official site Big jump from air craft in good condition perhaps nows a good time to convert one of those polytunnels to growing lettuce or something on hydroponics
  8. Another picture my mate sent of Foden Clearly see under lift holding machine up. It reared after i had driven it across yard steering seemed ok. When i backed up load must have swung away from back of machine. Boogie blocker was deployed hence why back axle tyres flat i reckon about 12 ton on each rear tyre What ever i now no what is foolhardy to try with it. It handled same load fine through out 180 degrees with legsdown. also a couple more jobs its sorted out These are the sort of jobs it makes look easy backup across field picture was taken after it moved about 10ft forward rear wheels about out of sight defeated attempts of two quadtracs to move it over the course of 2 weeks

Is it only me being sceptical or are the press releases on this subject subtly moving from “In very good condition protected by the sands to very corroded frail only just announced its split 1/3 of the way around ” Notice we are getting the go for broke messages wont be here in a years time (priceless object cobblers).. Blown huge amounts of money on a lifting frame that is not going to work going back to using slings that we are told in a roundabout way may not get it up in one lump. Costs gone from £350,000 to £500,000 + what it costs to stabilise it. Then what ever comes to the surface will not be recognisable to the general public as the once grand machine that flew over Britain. Probably be of more interest to marine biologists. What will become of it with my basic knowledge of chemistry? Different metals and acid it’s going to be turned into a battery for 2 years. Then one or more split tea bags will go on display If I am wrong on all the above I will say so and sorry on this site unreservedly hope someone who is in charge of project is willing to do same if i am right Churchill Criticism may not be agreeable but it is the same as pain in the human body it draws attention to an unhealthy state of things
  10. Modest unassuming guy with a great story to tell priceless look of genuine amazement briliant vidieo thanks for fetching it to our attention
  11. Reminds me of this picture May have been on here before. The first picture by the way shows me lowering it down after it reared. I had actually driven it prior to this and it was still steerable wieght approx 10 ton front of body i am lifting is ballasted with concrete and scrap not clear from picture but under lift is stopping it rearing even more. will put another picture on when i get it
  12. When i first started this thread i had a few people ask how much it it would carry when modified to day i found out much it cant carry will put pic on on as soon as i recieve it on my e mail.
  13. Cant help with the truck but the crane Is Earnest holmes with longer Boom(s) fitted
  14. Heres a rough sketch of one i fabricated many years ago for a local haulage company it was made from thickwalled 4" box and heavy plate and was designed to be bolted to the floor and wall. It would give a degree of protection if split rim came off. But little if a tyre burst through over inflation
  15. before anybody asks the the one my dad was involved with was a new rim fitted with an old split single piece rim assembled by some one else and left with a tyre lever wedged in to inflate it
  16. Basicaly the locking rim system and i believe there 3 types used. 1 Employed a loose rim that had a taper on that engaged a taper on to a split rim that fitted the actual rim of the tyre these where fairly idiot proof as long as you dont sprain the locking ring and every thing was clean and hunky dory and you use common sense this will cover 97 percent of the people on this site and the tire changes A three piece rim 2 A system which had a rim with a deep well in it it employed only a split locking rim but a very deep flange that used the tyre to lock it into the the rim A two piece rim Went on to motor way to change tyre on one of these type 3 A solid locking ring with two notches cut into it to it basically its like a chinese puzzle if you get it off you can put it back on again a two piece rim When i was doing my time as an apprentice main job was mending punctures serving petrol and general dogs body. Being in a rural area we got lots ex war 1 war11 time to repair i have had wooden spoked wheels with no 3 example on The safty cage idea came about because if you have to employ people and cover your arse. Look at the system if its put to gether correctly it aint going to wrong unless you employ idiots but if you are not sure leave it to some one else

  19. im going for DUKW with backaxles robbed hidden behind something
  20. i agree whole heartedly. When i was 7 in the early 60s i was smuggled in to Beverly westwood hospital under under my Mothers long winter coat to see my Father who was in traction head inclined down wards with wieghts attached to his legs. He worked for a company called Triangle Motor Company North cave and had been blowing up a 1000X20 brand new rim with second hand tire on it using the approved method at that time of standing the rim against a wall wrong way round blowing it up with the airline on from the back and standing to one side. the rim let go and it blow him across a petrol forcourt and through a show room window and on to the bonnet of a humber hawk. It was six weeks before mum found out if he would walk never mind work again. Luckily he recovered but had back problems that kept reoccuring though he always blamed his deafness in later years to been head down for nine weeks
  21. As pointed out K9s have a three piece wheel not a bolted together split rim. Only thing i can add is make or beg steal or borrow a bead breaker still can be hard work but better than braying angle iron in. And make sure its seated correctly before and during inflation. Or let someone else have the hardwork depending how you value your own time http://www.jhmbuttco.com/acatalog/Shop_Manual_Bead_Breakers_1137.html

The recovery methodology includes a bespoke lifting frame which will be employed to retrieve the Dornier from the seabed. Of modular construction the frame will be assembled around the aircraft, the lower sections being inserted beneath the wings and rear fuselage before attachment to the upper lifting portion (once on the surface this structure will also be employed as a transport cradle). Lifting Frame Design raf museums web site there is a drawing on but it hasnot pasted in www.rafmuseum.org.uk
