Bedford MW Markings

Hi folks,

I am looking to paint up our MW to represent one of the units which landed at Sword beach.

The info I have says:

8th Infantry Brigade Group

1st South Lankashire Regiment

2nd East Yorkshire Regiment

Can anyone help with which markings I should put where?

I'm going to get some stencils made up. I have the Z number and will be painting this on the doors and on the rear cross member. I'll also be putting stars on the doors and bonnet.

Thanks!

Chris

Hi John,

Not quite ready yet, but we have the body on, doors on, cab sides refubished and almost fitted, tailgate made and on, engine in bits! Spent the last 10 days working on it non stop. It's looking a lot more like it's supposed to. I'll update the blog when I get a chance!

Hi Chris,

Interesting you are going to put Z no on doors, whilst i have seen pic's of MW's with said no's there, I've also seen them with the no's on edge of the right hand bonnet side (just above where the sides slot in),.....must admit to this the location mine will be going on. :)

Re vehicle markings, it CAN start to get 'interesting',.........Typically the arm of service colour for infantry was RED, within which would be a number representing unit/division.

Info I've got regarding the units mentioned, and other info that may be of intrest, as follows...........

Order of Battle; British 3rd Infantry Division. 6th June 1944.

8th Infantry Brigade, comprising of RED BACKING

1st Batt, The Suffolk Regt.

2nd Batt, The East Yorks Regt.

1st Batt, The South Lancashire Regt.

Serial no's for above 81 Hq Senior Inf Brigade

55,56 and 57 Inf Batt. (these no's are white,15.4 cm high on red square backing, of 24.14cm wide by 21.6cm high)

9th Infantry Brigade, comprising of GREEN BACKING

2nd Batt, The Lincolnshire Regt.

1st Batt, The Kings Own Scottish Borderers (KOSB)

2nd Batt, The Royal Ulster Rifles.

Serial no's for above 87 Hq Second Inf Brigade

60,61 and 62 Inf batt. (again white no's but on Green backing)

185th Infantry Brigade, comprising of BROWN BACKING

2nd Batt, The Royal Warwickshire Regt.

1st Batt, The Royal Norfolk Regt.

2nd Batt, The Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. (KSLI)

Serial no's for above 94 Hq Junior Inf Brigade

67,68 and 69 Inf batt. ( again white no's but on Brown backing)

As well as above there is also 2nd Batt Middlesex Regt who were Div troop heavy machine gun and mortar battalion. (Black Backing)

Will be back with some more info .........but now, THE DENTIST. :shake:

Andy

Right O'........me again;

The markings detailed in my last posting, would be on drivers side front mudguard and rear body.

On passenger side front/rear vehicles would carry Divisional markings,...........in the case of 3rd Infantry Div, this is a BLACK triangle (base width of 24cm by 22cm high) with a RED triangle upside down, within. (this was middle of black one, giving 3 equal small black triangles around said red one,........if this makes sense. :))

Hope info in last two posts is of some help, mate.

All the best,

Andy

Ps, don't forget Bridge classification plate on front, MW's are normally 3.

Hi Andy,

So if I am reading this right, I need a red square with 8 on one side, and the black/red traingle on the other side? I've had a look through my photos and there seems to be Z numbers on both the doors and bonnet sides. Which one was correct I don't know, perhaps both are?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Chris,.............

If you go for RED backing, you'd need to one of the following, 81/55/56/57. (these no's,..and corrisponding regts, made up the 8th Inf Brig.

Re location of Z no's,....................don't think there is a 'wrong' location, re doors or bonnets, differing vehicles (esp forward control types,- Matador for example) had them on doors, down to prefferance, I guess.......:)

All the best,

Andy
