Rick W Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 None of your half-hearted Scammels here! Serious heavy metal, comments and ids appreciated. Kicking off, dont know this one, not had chance to look it up yet, any ideas? Quote
gritineye Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Don't know what it is, but it's mind bogglingly stupendous , why couldn't I have invented that? Quote
6 X 6 Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 What an extraordinary machine. I hope someone will be able to tell us what it is and what it was used for. Quote
Runflat Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 A wonderfully rare photo of a Austro-Daimler C-Zug, also known as 'Gigant'. Designed by Ferdinand Porsche for transporting heavy Skoda howitzers and motors on road and rail (normal and Russian guage). Each 38cm M16 howitzer required five C-Zuge (i.e. tractor plus a four-axle 30-ton trailer) - one each for the left and right base, one for the mount, one for the barrel and one for ammunition. Quote

I'm struggling to find an image of this beast, can only find 28cm guns (anyone?), but I can't believe a solitary Scammell Constructor wouldn't manage the whole caboodle..... Quote
Rlangham Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Here's a page on the M16 http://www.landships.freeservers.com/38cm_m16_walkaround.htm Quote
Tony B Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 imagine trying to get that round the country lanes? Quote

Runflat Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I came across this on eBay... looks like the trailer (and barrel) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=380040785508&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=025 Quote

Is it me or do the trailer wheels look like they are steering? The rail wheels are visible as well, what a good picture, thanks for posting that. Quote
Runflat Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I've found some more on this in "Kraftfahrzeuge und Panzer des Osterrichischen Heeres 1896 bis heute" - looks like the trailers had two sets of articulating 4-wheeled bogies, just like a train! Quote
