Adrian Barrell
Well it's American but what from, I've no idea.
Gman555
Is it American? I listed it under German vehicles as a collector I showed it to in the past thought it was german... The mystery continues
Adrian Barrell
The catches are certainly US.
Bob Grundy
The catches could have been purchased by the Germans from the USA on the world market. Every item on vehicle does not necessarily have to come from that country which manufactured it.
Gman555
True, but it would make sense if it is American as this came out of a junkyard in southern Arizona a few miles from where General Patton's ww2 training grounds were located. 11th Armoured
Could be way wide of the mark, but there seems to be a very similar-looking box on the rear of the M42 Duster. 11th Armoured
Definite similarities, I thought - I did wonder, given its unusual shape, whether it had been re-purposed from another vehicle for use on the M42, but I've found nothing to back that up so far. Gman555
That is it!! Any idea what was originally stored in the box? It has a half round bracket inside and was clearly made to hold something specific.
Funkfelder
It is a stowage box for the M42. That said, remember that the M42 was given to the BW in numbers in the 50s and 60s. The specimen vehicle pictured with the questioned box shows several other items of German army modifications including blackout lights, taillights, the jerrycan, etc. My guess is that the German made box was added in the modification process. The box content could serve as something as mundane as an aux. fire extinguisher or such. Inspect the box closely and tell us what markings you find on it. It may, minimally include a 12 digit NSN number (NATO stock number) 0000-00-000-0000 and the makers mark and/or name.
Adrian Barrell
It's not German! This is one fitted to a US M42 in Vietnam.
mogmaner
The shape look about right for a toe jack.
Downsizer
Hi, do you have any measurements for the box, it is quite an interesting shape. Thanks
