Having viewed Safariswings superb montage on the Somme, can i recommend this book. The poem In flanders Feild' was written at the Essex Casualty clearing station, about 1.5 Km from the centre of Ieper. The area around the town is now known as the Salient, from 1914 till 1918, it was the only major Belgium town not under German control. there are 5 battles of Ieper, then spelt Ypres, Passchendaele being the 4th.

in this book the authors give a full comprehensible history of the battle, interspersed with personal extracts and disscusions of how and why each step was taken. For anyone planning to visit the area it is a good start to understanding the entire campaing.
