ajmac
It's coming along Pete, sorry for side tracking you lately! Were OYs widely used in Normandy? Any ideas what the War Department number was for yours?
peter75
It's coming along Pete, sorry for side tracking you lately! Were OYs widely used in Normandy? Any ideas what the War Department number was for yours? Hi Alastair. I haven't seen many pictures of OY's in Normandy but I haven't spent a lot of time looking. I have not got the W,D, number. The post war rebuild plate was removed when the tipping gear was fitted. and there was nothing on the doors or bonnet. It was first registered in 1959. Peter. peter75
I haven't done much since harvest as I have been doing other things but I have made up a plate that goes on the middle of the wooden cross member in the back of the cab. I have also rebuilt the front section of the prop shaft. This runs straight with very little movement. My prop shaft was running 4" to 5" out of line to avoid the tipping gear which had destroyed the seals and damaged the bearing. I got new bearing, seals and gaskets off Chris Morter Peter. peter75
Took some pictures of the spare wheel carrier. It is held in place with 2 angle irons on the right side and a cab mount on the left side, I need a spring to finish fixing in on. I have striped the the steering box and rebuilt it. The box was not very smooth to turn and when I took it apart there was a bit of metal in the bottom bearing which had damaged the bearing. The rest of the box was in very good order so I ordered 2 new bearings. I cleaned the parts up and removed the old bearings. There is a cir clip at the bottom of the worm so you have to remove bottom bearing and spacer first then you can remove the worm and top spacer. Peter. peter75
I then fitted the new bearings, worm, cir clip and spacers I then fitted the shaft back in the box and adjusted the adjusting nut on top of the box to set the bearings and locked it off with a stud. I then refitted the gear and bottom plate. To set the gear and shaft you have to fit gaskets under the end plate until it moves freely and there is no end play. This takes time and I took it apart 4 times before I was happy. I then fitted the drop arm and the steering column cover Peter.
peter75
I have not done anything OY lately but I pulled the gearbox off the engine and stripped it down tonight. I was very suprised as the gearbox was like new with no sings of wear. all I need to do is clean it up and reassemble it with new gasgets. I will post some pictures at the weekend. Peter. peter75
I have got the gearbox rebuilt and taken a compresser apart ready clean up but my computer has packed up so I Carn't get the picture's out my camra. Peter.
peter75
I took the cylinder head off the engine tonight and it looks like new apart from N, o, 4 which is very badly pitted. So unless I can get a liner the engine is scrap. Peter.
landrover nick
Hi Peter i had the block on my MWR fitted with liners (i had water damage in one of the bores that when the company i use for machining were boring the block to see what size oversize pistons we could use the water damage had created a hard spot in the steel ) took a bit of research to find a modern liner of the correct dimension that could be modified to suit the Bedford block ,is the engine original to the truck ,if you decide to stick with this engine i can let you have there contact details Nicky
peter75
Thanks Nicky, I had a bit of a panic last night. Thort I may need a new engine. Rang North Lincs Engineering at Manby N, r, Louth today and the said they could supply and fit a liner at good price subject to looking at it. So I will strip the bottom end out this weekend and clean it down to take over next week. Peter.
peter75
Trying to post pictures with my phone if its worked the first picture should be a good cylinder and the next 2 show N, o, 4. Peter.
landrover nick
Hi Peter That s pretty bad the rust has taken a lot of the sealing surface for the head gasket away at the top of the bore is it going to be possible to have liner made with a step at the top to make good the seal at the top of the bore . Nicky
peter75
The rust on the top face is with in the combustion chamber of the cylinder head The piston on N, o, 4 is running 3-4mm lower than the other pistons. I think the truck my have been pulled off with a stuck piston and bent the conrod. The engine was running smoothly when I bort it although it was breathing oil which I put down to valve stem seal's or stuck rings. I will strip it down this weekend to find out what's wrong. Peter. ajmac
That is poor condition Pete. I've stripped a 239 Ford Flathead V8 that was in a similar state, it is still in the workshop being used as a Christmas tree, but one day I will get the block lined back to std. peter75
I was awake early this morning so I got up and took sump off engine. The first thing I saw was lots of silicon gasget round the sump. I then took N,o,4 piston out, the conrod nuts looked to have locktite on them. Once I had the piston out in the daylight I could see the top off the piston had been ground down. The journal on N, o, 4 is like new and the conrod is good. Peter.
peter75
I Finnished cleaning the compressor and got it rebuilt today. For a small part it has taken a lot of work to get it done. As the weather was warm today I decided to do some paint spraying, the front wheels had been shot blasted and primed last year but were not looking there best so I rubbed them down to repaint, I also got the stearing box, propshaft and gearbox out and got 2 coats of redoxide on them. Peter.
peter75
I collected the engine to day. In the end I have had to have a full crank regrind, N,o,4 relined, the face of the block scimed and a NOS camshaft with new bearings. I have not done any thing with the head yet. Peter. peter75
on witch oversize bore are you now Peter, I remember this kind of work on my QL engine. Hi Guy. They were able to keep the engine at +30 as the other cylinders were OK and only needed a clean up. Also I had a set of NOS +30 pistons so I won't need to get another set. Peter. peter75
Excellent work another step in the right direction Nicky Hi Nicky. An expensive and unexpected step in the right direction. I hope the last major cost are the radiator and wiring loom. The head and manifold will need facing but if there are any problems I have spairs so can swap them round. Peter. peter75
The OY has a drain across the front of the bulkhead along the topedge of the bonnet. This has badly rotted so I have had a go at making a new one. I decided to try to make it in two half's and to pannal beat it round a wooden former. I screwed the metal to the former and will weld the holes up later. I have got the first half done and I am pleased with the result and I will repeat the process for the other side. There are a cople of places that need cutting and welding to lose some metal. Peter.

peter75
Hi Just wondered who did your engine work.? Thanks Hi Andy. North Lincs Engineering at Manby NR Louth did the work. They specialise in large engines in ships and generators etc. They knew what a 28hp engine was and supplied the bearings for the cranck and the liner. I got the cam and cam bearings of Chris Mortar. They could have metal sprayed they cam and reprofiled it but the costs were more than double the new one. Peter.
