condenser query(not very exciting)

Question

This is probably a really dumb question, but it has been recommended that I change the condenser in my distributer to see if that would cure the intermittent fault, I have found some one supplying the right size and he say`s it will do 6 and 12 and 24 volts system`s are condenser`s not volt sensitive?. I have asked my friends and no one is sure so thought I would try on here and hope that some one does. Thanks Simon

Simon distributor capacitors (condensers) are generally rated at 500 volts which gives a good operating margin as about 300 volts is the "Back EMF" released when the points open & the magnetic field in the coil collapses. It matters not to the capacitor what voltage was used to originally energise the coil.
