Jessie The Jeep
On Saturday, September 7th, around 10 MV's and about 70 people gathered at the edge of a disused quarry. The quarry was in fact, the former location of RAF Scorton. The people from the local village decided something needed to be done to mark the airfield's history and those who were stationed there. It wasn't used much beyond the war, but in that time was home to Spitfires, Mustangs, Blenheims, Beaufighters, Mosquitos, Typhoons and P-61 Black Widows from the 9th Air Force. The station commander of RAF Leeming unveiled the memorial, which stands next to the restored windsock mast.
Jessie The Jeep
The airfield has been heavily quarried, and this panoramic image below shows the area that was once the runways of Scorton. Jessie wore the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron Badge for the occasion. This was one of the Black Widow squadrons.

Jessie The Jeep
After the ceremony, the vehicles parked up at the village hall where inside there were further displays of RAF Scorton's history along with a buffet.
Ian L
Well done Steve, its great to see these old RAF stations remembered and its a rather picturesque setting with the memorial stone against the quarry rather than a housing estate or worst still a old rundown trading estate. great photos
