Centurion Mk 11

Recommended Posts

Dear All

The prefix to this post should be "several questions" really.......:D

I'm building a 1/6 model cent, from the kit by Armortek but wanting to make my own mark on it. The basic kit is a Mk 5-2, so by the addition of additional glacis armour, a .50 cal ranging m/g and IR searchlight, I get a Mk11. That's the plan anyway.

Am therefore seeking any and all info please, photo's etc of Mk 11s that might be out there? I've scoured the web and there isnt a lot of info, or pics. I've searched this part of the HMVF forum without finding any reference to Mk 11, so any help would be appreciated. It's the little details I need - such as headlight configuration? I believe the Mk 11 didnt have the 2 "blackout" lights in line one above the other, but did it have 2 single headlamps, 2 pairs, was 1 of each pair IR?

2nd question - for reasons I wont dwell on, I'm also after information any regarding Centurions used by 1st Royal Dragoons, before they amalgamated in 1969 with The Blues (Royal Horse Guards) to become Blues & Royals. Obviously I want to connect a Mk 11 to the Regiment (or I'll have to cheat). Any ex Royals out there remember what you used to drive? I've been on the Royals forum, and other Household Cavalry forums, with no real success. Even the HCAV museum in Windsor has been able to provide nothing. (Try Bovington I hear you cry, but I need VRNs to dig out the record cards).

And finally - anyone know of a Mk 11 in the UK anywhere? I may just have to go and get my own photos......

Hope someone out there can help

Cheers all

Kevin

What you need to do is purchase some books about the Centurion, I myself have a book Modern Combat Vehicles: 2 "CENTURION" author Simon Dunstan and shows pictures of what you describe about the I.R. lights on the Mk 2 Try and see what is on offer at Amazon?. hope this helps.

Hi Kevin

If you get no further comments I would post in tracked vehicles as you may get more response. Some pics might help to stir peoples interest too! The Armortek kits look very impressive. My problem is I have too many 1/1 kits to be getting on with (admittedly of cvrt not cent!), never mind finding the time for a model version!!

Out of interest have you any experience of the mark 1 tanks kits? My impression is that the Armortek products are better engineered but also more pricey?

Hi Brucie - thanks. I do have several books although at present struggling to get the Dunstan book you mention at a sensible price. It is recommended and I gather does feature several pics of the Mk 11.

There is also another book due out later this year - sequel to "Centurions 3,5,6 in detail". I have been correspnding with the author/publisher who have been very helpful so far.

Timbo - ironically my post started in "tracked vehicles" but (I assume) the moderators saw fit to shift it to "models". I can understand, although I want to hear from the 1/1 people as much as those building models!

Re Mark 1 Im afraid I have no experience. My understanding (and dont quote me) is that they are more GRP whereas Armortek manufacture all metal kits? Scale on my model is literal - a 3" glacis in 1/1 is 0.5" aluminium on my model. It's not something I can pick up on my own! The Cent is my first Armortek model and have been very impressed thus far.

Regards

Kevin
