Topdog Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Hi Folks, Val and I are going to Jersey for a week, arriving there the day before Liberation day. Are there any recommendations of places to go, especially those which are not as well known? Cheers Dave Quote
ford 369 Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 check out the cios Jersey website ,many of their bunkers will be open liberation day ,the Palot steam museum is well worth a look as is Damian Hornes liberation museum in St Ouens bay, then theres the underground hospital in St Peters valley and the castles in St Helier and Gorey plus the fort at St Aubin as well as some excellent pubs and restaurants all over the island Nigel Quote
Tony B Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 Where ever you turn there will be something, Fort Regent over St Heler, ignore the pool. Noirmont, try to do that at sunset. Houge Bie, the Dolmen and the bunker. Mont Orguill at Gorey. Battry Lothrign up at Les Landes. Corbiere. L'Aleval, AKA the German Road. Elizebeth Castle in St Aubin's bay. Take a brisk walk around Les Landes common, the whole area is covered in fortifications. The States Mueum at Pier Road, or the Weighbridge entrance. (If you call it Liberation Square the Crapaud's will have to think. When you visit Damien's musuem go for a walk along the dunes and beach. It's on the five mile road, actually it three and three quarter miles long, the beach is five miles long. On the land side there are the remains of the First World War German POW camp. also up by Val De La Mare resivoir is an intresting machine gun fortification, if it is open. L'Etacq futher along the road, going up to Les Landes also has a number of fortifications, you'll get a complete view of the Atlantic Wall, all within about twenty minutes drive. If your out on the East Coast, vist St Catherine's breack water. St Peter's Hotel is good for lunch, and had a 20mm AA mount on top of it. The Jersey Royals are just coming in, get them from St Quen, there grown properly on sand with Vraic as fertiliser, the diffrence from the ones you'll buy in UK is amazing. If you want something off the track, go to St Helier to the corner of Howard Davis park. There is the only official British War Cemetery not looked after by CWWG. Try and get some Cabbage Bread as well. I'll be over the week after to collect Katy. Enjoy the day. Quote
