russian tanks

There seem to be more and more russian tanks - T55s and T72s as well as loads of other tracked stuff becoming available from eastern europe which is great as I'm a particular fan of the T72. However, does this increased availability mean that the price will be driven (no pun intended) down over time?

Is this a bad time to invest in something really cool and lots of fun from that part of the world?

regards

Hi Paul.

Price of the army surplus T-34 here in Czech Republic increased 5 times since 1990, price of the BMP-1 roughly three times and will be worse. By my meaning, time for the investment in something rare like special Czechoslovak BPzV "SVATAVA" reconnaissance vehicle, based on the BMP-1 when not many of them were manufactured, shortens very quickly. What more, there is a continuous demand for spares from countries like Yemen or Mongolia, where there is no ban for export to these countries and profit from the vehicle parted out for spares, especially weapons is 5 times higher than from something sold on as it were and where it were basis. So, the official policy of the private companies licenced for military export of the army surplus is to dismantle a vehicle, sell the gun, engine, tracks and wheels and scrap all the remains. I'd guess situation in Hungary or Poland would be the same. Sooner or later you'll end up trying to import hardware directly from Russia, where wear-up is much worse, not to mention transportation costs.

I am sorry Paul I had no good news for you.

I noticed your interest in the T-72 where the price would be really over the skies. I think you may rather think about the Czechoslovak version of the T-55 AM2, which has got more powerfull engine version mounted, new gun stabilisation "KLADIVO" (hammer in English) system and some 5-7 more tons of weight due to heavier protection put on. The whole tank looks much more sexy with all the goodies on it and what is the big pros', there are rubber block available for the track pads. What I read in the Czech military magazine recently, there were a few dosens of the T-55 refurbished to the AM2 version in late nineties, (hundreds and maybe millions of Czech Crowns paid for it), exported to Hungary and then with no use at the training field paid back here to Czech. As the Czech Army gave up using of the T-55 long time before 2000, there are these tanks somewhere here with the spotless engines staying and waiting to be scrapped for spares.

Hello Paul.

I thought you wrote about the investment in your first message. Some people do invest in the stamps collections, some collect old paintings or jewellery. I wish my grandfather purchased a Tiger tank after the May 1945 and dag it in his paddock somewhere, before communists overtook the leadership in my country. I would have two houses for its price at the moment.

Regards Robert
