Jessie The Jeep
I'm about to get new linings fitted on the front shoes of my WC51. How thick should the linings be when new? Thanks Steve
Tony B
Just measured a one that looks unused. Thickness is 4 mm. Does that sound about right?
Jessie The Jeep
Yes, that sounds about right. One of the better ones looked to be about 3/16 inch without measuring, which is a fraction over 4mm.
Tony B
Yeah 4.8 mm seems a standard thickness. I have to get a set done hoping this place can do them. http://www.efbreen.co.uk/Frictionworkshop.html I need a set for Katy, then hers will go in for relining and fitting to mine. I could also do with tracking down a couple of Norweigiam Cloverleafs if you hear of any.
Jessie The Jeep
There's a place in Newcastle that looks like it can do them. I can drop them off there and save the postage since they aren't that lightweight. Don't know about any tyres available around here.
Richard Farrant
Yeah 4.8 mm seems a standard thickness. Tony, You have asked this question before, according to the TM the correct thickeness is 1/4". Might know of some part used cloverleafs, will have to make contact with the guy.
Jessie The Jeep
Just found them in my ORD Supply Cat. TM 9-808 ( 15th Aug '44 ) That says 3/16 inch. Page 239, part number CC-571278
GoranWC51
Hi Tony, I will shortly have two cloverleafs for sale, off my WC51. They've been on the back axle and still retain 70-80% of the tread. My WC51 is presently under restoration by my good friend Micha Korst in Veghel, Holland, and a rear tire change is planned, from cloverleafs to NDT's - like the two front one's and the spare. Check out http://www.MVBros.com for pictures and you'll probably see the shape the tires are in. Holland is nearer to you than Sweden, too :-) Goran N
Tony B
Thanks for all replies guys. Richard I couldn't find the calipers when measuring, have now! So the lining was measured with a tape measure. Goran, thanks. you are right , and I'm looking for an excuse to go European for a couple of days.
GoranWC51
Tony, Send me an e-mail once you're ready to go to Holland and I'll send you the particulars. My Dodge, and the tyres, are in Veghel, outside of Eindhoven. Goran N

Tony B
Right, next stage in the saga. I took the brake shoes over to Southern Componets Group in Dartford this morning. What an Alladins Cave! But more later. They are agents for E.F. Breen at Maidstone http://www.efbreen.co.uk/Frictionworkshop.html Both lots couldn't have ben more helpful. Quote for them is £25.80 per shoe inc. VAT. Breens are capable of relining just about any size.
Jessie The Jeep
That's expensive! Mine were just over £18 in VAT per shoe from Swift Brake and Clutch ( http://swiftbrake.com/product.asp?ID=658 )
Tony B
The South East I suppose. Trouble is the carraige on the things is phonomenal.
Jessie The Jeep
How does your re-lining price compare to NOS shoes complete with linings?
Tony B
About the same, less P&P. But the N.O.S. ones are rivited and old spec, so probably asbestos linings.Give Breen's their due, they did say it is possible to the job cheaper but they use very high quality material. Seeing the size of some of the stuff they keep in stock I'd trust their judgment. I only want to do the job once, so I'd rather pay a bit more for best quality stock. I also saw the effect of Asbestos on a friend so I would REALLY like to avoid contact with the stuff. Incidentally they rate the lining at 4.8 mm
Jessie The Jeep
4.8mm is near as 3/16, which is what I got.
Tony B
Well at least we have difinitivley answered one question! :-D Wish I'd know about Southern Componets before, they had the bits I needed to make up fuel lines for the Onan and 24 volt system on the wall! :banghead:
